Orlando woke Wednesday to light rain, and the soggy start is only the opening act. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to spread across the city through the afternoon, with repeated downpours keeping roads, commutes and outdoor plans on alert.
Storms Build Through The Afternoon
Rain is likely to continue through late morning before thunderstorms become more widespread. The high should reach about 81 degrees, but temperatures may fall into the mid-70s during the afternoon as clouds and rain take over.
The National Weather Service in Melbourne is forecasting a 90% chance of precipitation and between 1 and 2 inches of rain today, according to its latest forecast discussion. Some thunderstorms could bring brief heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds.
Repeated Downpours Raise Flooding Concerns
Rain will not necessarily arrive in one clean burst. Multiple rounds of showers and storms are expected through tonight, when another 80% chance of rain and up to an additional inch of rainfall are possible.
That wetter outlook is a substantial escalation from Tuesday's Hoodline forecast. Minor flooding could develop in low-lying spots and on roads that drain slowly, especially where several downpours pass over the same area.
Wet Pattern Continues Into The Weekend
Thursday brings another stormy day, with a high near 82 and a 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Rain chances rise to 80% Friday and Saturday, while highs climb into the mid- to upper 80s.
Saturday could be especially blustery, with east-southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph and gusts up to 30 mph. Sunday may reach 90 degrees, but thunderstorms are still likely after 2 p.m., keeping the weekend unsettled rather than beach-perfect.
Coastal Plans Need Extra Caution
The weather service is warning of a high risk for dangerous rip currents along the Volusia County and Space Coast beaches Wednesday, and strongly discourages entering the water. Orlando residents heading east should also watch for lightning, heavy rain and rougher boating conditions later this week.
For now, the practical forecast is simple: expect a wet commute, keep outdoor plans flexible and never drive through water covering a roadway. The unsettled pattern is expected to linger into early next week before rain chances gradually ease.
