Becks Place, a neighborhood bar and grill in Overland Park known for its fried chicken sandwiches and regulars who felt like family, has been padlocked by the state of Kansas. The Kansas Department of Revenue seized the business over more than $40,000 in allegedly unpaid liquor and sales taxes, sealing the doors and posting a public notice outside.
According to the Kansas City Star, the department said the fees date back to December 2025 and that it moved to seize the business only after multiple attempts to reach the owner went unanswered. Agents took known bank accounts, on-site cash, business inventory and the owner's personal property, the paper reported, and the state plans to sell everything at public auction, with proceeds going toward the delinquent taxes.
Conflicting addresses have surfaced in coverage of the seizure. The Star reported Becks Place operated at 9148 Santa Fe Drive for the past three years, while the Johnson County Post listed the address as 9148 W. 87th St.
A Husband-and-Wife Spot Built on Long Days
Bob and Lisa Beck opened Becks Place in late summer 2023, taking over the spot that had been home to Irish pub McGuire's Tavern, per the Johnson County Post. The couple put in 15 to 16-hour days to get the place open, the Star's report noted, and Lisa Beck said most menu items were made in-house from the start.
The bar built a following for comfort food with a twist, serving fresh salsa and hot chips straight from the fryer alongside a maple bourbon fried chicken sandwich topped with bacon and provolone. Per the same account, Becks Place had a devoted crowd of regulars early on, and Lisa Beck described her affection for the people and their stories, saying the goal was a friendly neighborhood bar where everybody knows everybody. She called the community very supportive.
No Response From Owners as Customers Notice Locked Doors
The Star said it attempted to contact Bob and Lisa Beck but received no response as of Tuesday. Meanwhile, the article notes that commenters reacting to the closure reported seeing the restaurant's sign and locked doors while showing up for dinner, with some asking when the bar might reopen and at least one searching for a GoFundMe to help the business. Others simply praised Bob and Lisa Beck for what they built.
Part of a Broader Pattern of Kansas Bar Seizures
Another Kansas Tax Seizure The Social Bar & Grill in Shawnee was subject to warrants concerning more than $52,000 in unpaid sales tax, according to KSNT.
Wichita's The Anchor Bar and Grill was also seized for nonpayment of taxes, with KAKE reporting that two tax warrants filed in April required payment of $2,534.40 in sales tax and $939.90 in liquor excise taxes for a single month. Kansas statute addresses the issuance and execution of tax warrants and the seizure and sale of property for unpaid taxes, according to the Kansas State Legislature's published code.
For now, Becks Place sits behind sealed doors, its fate tied to the state's planned auction. The Kansas Department of Revenue maintains a public listing where residents can view and bid on property seized for nonpayment of taxes, though no Becks Place-specific auction date has been identified.
