Chatime’s Overland Park storefront at 10150-A W. 119th St. is scheduled to close Oct. 13, the Kansas City Star reported. The shop is in Highland Plaza near U.S. Highway 69, next to Sahara Mediterranean Food and Tanner’s Bar & Grill, according to the Johnson County Post. Chatime plans to keep its current hours through closing: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, the Star reported.
Event service during the transition
Lauren and Sonny Yuen plan to shift the business toward mobile service after buying the franchise location in March 2025, according to the Star. Their event work has included a two-year residency at Starlight Theatre and several corporate events. The couple also started a mobile boba service called The Popping Pearl and a boba flight offering, the Star reported.
The Yuens are aiming to introduce a truck or trailer in spring 2027. Until then, Chatime plans to take part in pop-ups and public events and accept private bookings; customers can inquire at [email protected], according to the Star. After the storefront stops serving customers, the space is expected to remain the couple’s commercial kitchen until the lease ends.
The Star reported that the business intends to keep its Chatime name and menu in the mobile setup. Its current offerings include milk, fruit and fresh teas priced from $4.70 to $5.95, along with slushes and smoothies. The Yuens are still considering which drinks beyond boba can be prepared from a mobile operation, the Star reported.
The owners’ Kansas City background
Lauren Yuen previously worked in public relations and returned to Kansas City after living in New York City and Los Angeles. She has described those cities as part of the experience that informed her interest in a customizable boba business, according to CanvasRebel.
A local example of boba appearing beyond a dedicated tea shop is Alice Scooper’s, whose Midtown location offers bubble tea alongside ice cream. Its House of Boba menu includes more than 40 house-made syrups, Hoodline reported.
