A 66-year-old man died Saturday evening after being struck by a Dodge Durango near East Desert Inn Road and South Mojave Road. Police said the man had crossed the road outside a marked or implied crosswalk just before 7 p.m. when the 2019 white Dodge Durango, traveling east on Desert Inn Road, struck him with its front end.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the pedestrian died at Sunrise Hospital. The driver of the Durango cooperated with investigators, the paper reports. The crash remains under investigation, the paper reports.

A Fatal Crash Near Desert Inn and Mojave Roads

A 68-year-old male pedestrian died Friday morning after being hit by a van, according to the Review-Journal's earlier reporting. In February 2010, a 53-year-old man was fatally struck near Mojave Road while crossing outside a marked crosswalk, per the Review-Journal's archival reporting.

The wider Desert Inn corridor has seen a string of pedestrian crashes this fall. Two days before Saturday's fatality, a separate vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision occurred along East Desert Inn Road near Maryland Parkway on October 8, leaving a pedestrian critically injured, Hoodline previously reported. That crash followed an August multi-vehicle collision near Desert Inn and Paradise roads that sent several people to the hospital, with at least one person in critical condition; police reported that a pedestrian was involved in the August crash but had not specified the pedestrian's condition.

Pedestrian Deaths Remain Stubbornly High

By late September, 42 of the 90 traffic fatalities in Metro's jurisdiction were pedestrians, according to the Las Vegas Sun — nearly half of all roadway deaths in the county.

State traffic safety statistics compiled in August show that roughly 63% of pedestrian deaths in Nevada occur in locations with no crosswalk, according to a report from FOX5 Las Vegas.

What Nevada Law Says About Crossing Outside a Crosswalk

Under Nevada Revised Statutes 484B.287, pedestrians who cross a roadway outside a crosswalk between adjacent signalized intersections are legally required to yield the right-of-way to oncoming vehicles. The rule concerns right-of-way when crossing between adjacent signalized intersections. Police said the pedestrian had crossed outside a marked or implied crosswalk.

Nevada law also sets right-of-way rules for pedestrians crossing outside crosswalks.

Metro's investigation into Saturday's crash remains ongoing, and no additional details about potential citations or findings have been released.
