A large contingent of Kent County Sheriff's deputies descended on Algoma Township Thursday morning after a shooting sent them scrambling to the area near Indian Lakes Road and Pine Island Drive. By midday, authorities had described it as a mother-son case and reported that the mother had died at the scene.
The Kent County Sheriff's Office said it is investigating after the shooting occurred Thursday morning, according to WZZM 13. Accounts of the precise location differed: WZZM reported the shooting happened in the 1200 block of Indian Lakes Drive, while WOOD TV8 reported deputies were called a little after 9 a.m. to the area of Indian Lakes Road NE near Pine Island Drive. MLive placed the scene northwest of Rockford, noting deputies arrived around 9:15 a.m.
Large Police Presence Shuts Down the Area
The same WOOD TV8 report noted a large police presence in the area. MLive likewise reported that police told drivers to expect a heavy law enforcement footprint near the scene Thursday morning. Deputies have not yet released details about the circumstances of the shooting, according to the station's report.
WZZM 13 reported that the mother was shot and died at the scene. WOOD TV8 separately reported on an earlier-week incident in the nearby village of Sparta: there, a man shot and injured his mother and then took his own life.
Suspect Caught More Than Five Miles Away
A person of interest was taken into custody, KCSO confirmed, per WZZM 13's reporting. The person was detained near Ritchie Avenue and 14 Mile Road in Courtland Township — about 5.5 miles from where the shooting happened, according to the same account from WOOD TV8. Authorities did not release any information about that person's identity.
Kent County Sheriff Bryan Muir said the person in custody was the only person believed to have acted, the station reported. A sheriff's department spokesperson was expected to give a briefing on the incident, MLive reported, though no further details had surfaced as of Thursday morning.
A String of Recent Shootings in Kent County
A String of Recent Shootings in Kent County Thursday's incident adds to a string of shooting investigations the Kent County Sheriff's Office has logged over a period of more than a year and a half. In February, the sheriff's office said it was investigating a shooting that occurred just after 4 a.m. in the 400 block of 60th Street SE, with deputies responding and securing the scene, according to the Kent County Sheriff's Office. In January, deputies were dispatched to a shooting that followed a road-rage incident near Quarter Horse Drive in Algoma Township, per Motor City 911.
Other incidents date back further. And in March 2025, deputies responded to reports of gunfire in the Cutler Estates Mobile Home Village in Byron Township, near Spear Street SW and Fork Avenue SW, according to the sheriff's office.
