A person was shot just before 5 a.m. Thursday at a gas station near Poplar Avenue and McLean Boulevard in Midtown Memphis, and police have not yet said how badly the victim was hurt or whether a suspect is in custody.
Memphis police are investigating the shooting, according to Action News 5, which reported that dispatch confirmed a call about a person shot at the Poplar and McLean intersection. The station reported that the extent of the victim's injuries remains unknown, and it is also unclear if anyone has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting.
Few Details Released So Far
Beyond the time and general location of the shooting, authorities have released little information. Memphis police have not said what led up to the shooting or whether investigators believe it was targeted or random.
Poplar Avenue has seen other gun violence at gas stations in recent memory, though nothing in the available evidence ties those earlier incidents to Thursday's shooting. In January 2025, officers responding to a call at a Mobil station at 2264 Union Avenue in Midtown found a man dead at the scene, according to Action News 5's earlier coverage, which reported that officers got the call at 8:24 p.m. and arrived to find the victim already dead.
Pattern of Shootings Along the Corridor
A separate shooting left a man critically injured at an East Memphis gas station on Poplar Avenue near Colonial, with police responding to the 4800 block of Poplar at 8:16, per WREG. That victim was taken to Regional One in critical condition, the outlet reported. And in February 2026, a shooting on Poplar in Midtown left three people injured, including one victim in critical condition, with police saying video footage showed a suspect in a silver Jeep Cherokee hanging out of the passenger-side window holding what appeared to be a rifle-type firearm, according to WREG's report on that incident.
None of those earlier cases has been linked to Thursday's shooting in the available reporting, and each remains a separate investigation. The Memphis Police Department has said broadly that the city saw a historic decline in homicides in 2025, with fewer than 200 murders marking what the department described as the first time the city reached that milestone since 2019, according to a statement from the Memphis Police Department. That figure has not been independently verified against other crime-data sources in the evidence reviewed for this report.
Memphis police have not released further updates on Thursday's shooting at Poplar and McLean. Anyone with information is encouraged to cooperate with investigators as the case develops.
