Twenty years after “Young Folks” turned a whistled hook into an inescapable earworm, Peter Bjorn and John are bringing the song, and the rest of the album that spawned it, back to San Diego. The Swedish indie-pop trio plays Music Box in downtown San Diego on Friday, Oct. 16, as part of a tour marking the 20th anniversary of their breakthrough record, “Writer's Block,” according to FOX 5 San Diego/KUSI.
The band, made up of Peter Morén, Björn Yttling and John Eriksson, is touring Mexico and the United States in 2026 to celebrate the anniversary, according to bellyup.com. “Writer's Block,” originally released in 2006, was the group's first album to chart on the Billboard 200, as Pitchfork reports. The San Diego stop brings the band to Music Box at 1337 India Street, per musicbox.bellyup.com, with the show set for 9 p.m.
Young Folks Finds a New Generation
The album's signature single, “Young Folks,” featuring Victoria Bergsman, is widely credited with introducing Peter Bjorn and John to a much wider audience, and the band now has a new generation of listeners discovering the song, as noted by the FOX 5 San Diego & KUSI News report on the tour. Björn Yttling told the outlet that the band was simply trying to make a cool song for themselves and their friends rather than deliberately crafting an iconic whistle, and he said he finds it interesting and fun that so many young fans who missed the song's original release have since come around to it. Yttling also called “Writer's Block” a classic, adding that performing the album's personal lyrics now recalls his own life two decades earlier.
That global reach was always a bit lopsided at home. The group's music scored bigger outside its home country than within Sweden itself, the station's report notes. “Young Folks” achieved what Life of the Record describes as unexpected global success once the album was finished, according to Life of the Record. Looking back on the song's creation, the band has said the hit single essentially saved the group — guitarist Peter Morén told The Guardian, “We probably would have quit if Young Folks hadn't become the hit that it did,” in comments carried by The Guardian.
From Writer's Block to Endless Dream
The current tour isn't just a victory lap for one album. The band's songwriting approach has stayed broadly similar over the years, and experience has made the process easier, per the same account, with all three members drawing from both new and old music they listen to. Peter Bjorn and John released their most recent studio album, “Endless Dream,” in March 2020 just as the COVID-19 pandemic began, according to Pitchfork, and the band never toured behind it, which the station's report says left the record somewhat overlooked.
Pitchfork adds that “Endless Dream” was written to embody a brighter, more colorful sound following the band's darker 2018 LP. Yttling told FOX 5 San Diego & KUSI News that people seem excited about the current run of shows and that the band enjoys playing for audiences spanning generations. He also acknowledged the trio has gone through periods of friction with one another over the years, but said relations within the band are good right now.
What to Expect at Music Box
The Writer's Block 20th Anniversary Tour promises performances of the album alongside a selection of fan favorites from across the band's catalog, per bellyup.com's listing for the run. Josh Rouse is listed alongside Peter Bjorn and John for the broader tour, according to the same listing. Tickets for the Music Box date are available through the venue's concert listing, though pricing differs between sources: bellyup.com lists standing admission at $29.50 for both advance and day-of-show tickets, while Times of San Diego lists the show at $38.
Whatever the final price at the door, the draw remains the same: a Swedish trio returning to a record that nearly broke up the band before it made them internationally known. For longtime fans who first heard that whistle two decades ago, and for newcomers discovering “Young Folks” for the first time, Friday's Music Box show offers a rare chance to hear “Writer's Block” performed live in downtown San Diego.
