A Taylor County man first taken into custody in a runaway juvenile case now faces a pile of new charges, after investigators say a forensic search of his cellphone turned up more than 150 images of child sexual abuse material. Trenton Franklin was charged with an additional criminal count for every image recovered. The case began with a missing girl and a set of license-plate cameras, and it did not stop at the first arrest.
According to WGXA, Flock cameras helped locate a runaway juvenile girl on July 26, and a “male suspect,” later identified as Franklin, was taken into custody. Franklin was then charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, grooming a child and enticing a child for indecent purposes. 13WMAZ reports he was also initially charged with interference with child custody.
How a Cellphone Exam Widened the Case
Authorities arranged a forensic examination of Franklin's cellphone, and the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office digital forensic investigations laboratory in Valdosta assisted with it. Per the same account, investigators found over 150 images of child sexual abuse material, which the report also calls child pornography.
What Investigators Are Saying
Major Chad Payne, the Taylor County Sheriff's Office operations and investigations commander, said the case illustrates a larger point about how these investigations work. “This case is an example of why law enforcement investigations cannot always end with the initial arrest,” he said, as quoted in the WGXA report.
Payne also credited the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office for its expertise and assistance. “No single agency has every resource available, but through cooperation, shared expertise, and a common mission, we can accomplish far more together,” the report quotes him as saying. Sheriff John Sawyer likewise praised the Lowndes County lab, saying law enforcement agencies share a responsibility to protect children and hold exploiters accountable.
Where Franklin and the Juvenile Stand
In an earlier WGXA item, Taylor County authorities said the runaway minor was found safe and a man was detained following a search using Flock cameras. That report said Franklin was being held without bond, and that the sheriff's office thanked the Tift County Sheriff's Office for its help. Per 13WMAZ, the sheriff's office said the juvenile had been picked up by Franklin and was located in Tifton.
Nothing in the available reporting details Franklin's plea, attorney, bond hearing or case disposition. Nor does it say anything further about the juvenile beyond her being found safe.
