Pitt men's basketball is putting a hometown tech company's logo on its jerseys for the first time ever. Pitt Athletics and JMI Sports announced a multiyear partnership with Gecko Robotics, the Pittsburgh-founded AI and robotics firm, that will land the company's branding on Panthers uniforms starting this season.

The deal marks the first jersey patch partnership in Pitt men's basketball history, according to Pitt Athletics. The patch is set to debut Nov. 2, when the Panthers open their regular season at home against Rider, per the same announcement. Pittsburgh Business Times also reported the Nov. 2 debut and NIL opportunities included in the agreement.

Beyond the jersey itself, the partnership comes with a broader package of exposure for Gecko Robotics around Pitt basketball. The agreement includes branding and signage inside the Petersen Events Center, in-game recognition, and digital and social media features, Pitt Athletics says, along with community engagement opportunities tied to the program.

NIL Opportunities Built Into the Agreement

The deal also extends to Pitt's players directly. Gecko Robotics will create Name, Image, and Likeness opportunities for select Pitt men's basketball student-athletes, according to Pitt Athletics, funneled through H2PNIL — the NIL platform Pitt Athletics and JMI Sports launched earlier this year to generate revenue for student-athletes and support corporate partnerships like this one.

On the corporate side, Gecko Robotics will serve as Pitt men's basketball's Official Infrastructure Inspection Robotics Partner and a Gold Standard Partner of Pitt Athletics, according to On3. The company was founded in 2013 and is headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pitt Athletics notes. The Pitt News describes Gecko Robotics as an AI and robotics company valued at $1.25 billion, based in the North Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh, while WPXI has described the company as headquartered in the city's North Shore — accounts that differ on the exact neighborhood.

Gecko Already Backs a Cross-Town Rival

Pitt isn't the only Pittsburgh program wearing the Gecko Robotics name. The company also serves as the jersey sponsor of Duquesne University's men's basketball program, according to The Pitt News. Duquesne's team will feature Gecko Robotics as its first-ever jersey sponsor this season, WPXI reports, making the robotics firm a visible presence on both sides of the city's college basketball scene. The same report notes Pitt athletics recently expanded its partnership with UPMC to include logos on its football jerseys as well, part of a broader pattern of corporate branding spreading across Pitt's programs.

Part of a Wider Shift in College Sports

The Gecko deal lands amid a national rule change opening the door to exactly this kind of branding. The NCAA Division I Administrative Committee introduced a proposal that would let schools place two additional commercial logos on uniforms and pregame or postgame apparel during competition outside NCAA championships, according to the NCAA. The Division I rule change went into effect in August.

Other programs have already moved to cash in on the shift. UNLV reportedly signed Acesso as its official jersey patch partner across its teams under a five-season contract, while LSU is said to have agreed to a multimillion-dollar jersey patch deal with Woodside Energy, according to SportsPro. The outlet describes the NCAA's patch policy as the latest move to open new revenue streams for its member schools. For Pitt, the Gecko Robotics patch gives the program its own stake in that trend — and a hometown company front and center when the Panthers tip off against Rider.
