A shopper walked into the Tractor Supply on U.S. Highway 11 in Potsdam last Thursday, grabbed a Lincoln ARC welder off the shelf, and walked right back out without paying a dime. Now New York State Police want the public's help putting a name to the man they say pulled it off.

Troopers responded to the store at about 1:04 p.m. on October 22 after employees reported the theft, according to northcountrynow.com. By the time they arrived, the suspect was already gone. The welder itself was valued at $499.99, and the individual allegedly passed every point of sale in the store without stopping to pay before leaving the building.

The individual fled the scene in a vehicle before troopers could catch up, according to the same report from Newport Dispatch. A separate account from wwnytv.com specifies that the vehicle was an SUV, and that station reports state police are asking for help identifying a man allegedly connected to the theft.

Troopers Still Working to Identify Suspect

Four days after the incident, investigators still had no name attached to the case. State police say they are seeking the public's assistance identifying a suspect in the larceny at the Potsdam retail store, and anyone who recognizes the man or has information about the incident is asked to call troopers at 315-379-0012.

No arrest has been reported in connection with the theft, and no details about the vehicle's make, model, or license plate have been released. The case remains an active investigation out of the St. Lawrence County area, with state police continuing to work the tip line as the only publicly known lead.
