Taco Republic has closed its second and last brick-and-mortar location, shutting down its Prairie Village restaurant at 4100 W. 83rd St. after serving the Kansas City area for 13 years. The closure ends the brick-and-mortar run of a Mexican-style taco concept that started as a single stand in Kansas City, Kansas, and grew into a small local chain.
From a County Line Road Start to a Corinth Square Close
According to the Kansas City Star, Taco Republic closed its Prairie Village location on a Wednesday, shuttering the Corinth Square spot that had become its final outpost. The restaurant's story began in 2013 at Mission and County Line roads in Kansas City, Kansas, long before it expanded into Johnson County. Restaurateur Whitney VinZant took over Taco Republic in 2019, folding it into a restaurant portfolio that also includes Louie's Wine Dive, Gram & Dun, Louie's Reserve — formerly Cafe Trio — and Brewtop.
The Corinth Square location opened in 2021, giving Taco Republic a second home in Prairie Village alongside neighbors Johnny's Tavern, Modern Market Eatery and BRGR, the station's report notes. That second location ultimately outlasted the original County Line Road restaurant, which the company said it closed after choosing not to renew its lease there, per the same account. With the Prairie Village closure now final, Taco Republic no longer operates any standalone restaurant in the metro.
The Food Truck Will Keep Rolling
Taco Republic is not disappearing entirely. The company said it will continue catering, and its taco truck will still pop up around the metro, per the Star's reporting. Separately, the Taco Republic Truck's own event page describes itself as a fully-functioning catering and mobile restaurant, according to eattacorepublic.com. The menu that built the brand's following primarily consisted of street tacos, but also included empanadas, tostadas and quesabirria.
VinZant's path to running Taco Republic traces back to a 2019 deal in which Bread & Butter Concepts sold both BRGR and Taco Republic to a company VinZant formed, according to Johnson County Post. The purchase price for that sale was never disclosed. VinZant also had separate plans to convert a former Houlihan's in Fairway into an upscale concept called American Fire, though the city has said VinZant and the property owner could not agree on that project.
Corinth Square Keeps Shuffling Tenants
Taco Republic's exit adds to a run of changes around Corinth Square. Va Bene also closed its location at 8232 Mission Road in the same shopping center, the Star reports. Meanwhile, Flower Child opened a nearby Prairie Village location at 3915 W. 83rd St. and plans another restaurant at 4900 W. 119th St. in Leawood's Town Center, in a space formerly occupied by Houlihan's, with a late 2027 opening anticipated.
Back at Taco Republic's original starting point at Mission and County Line roads, change is also underway. Joe's Next Door, an offshoot of Joe's Kansas City Bar-B-Que, now occupies that former site. Per Startland News, the owners planned to launch the restaurant in May inside the former Taco Republic complex, with a dining room expected to seat roughly 80 to 90 people combined. The partners also planned to begin hiring 30 to 40 workers in April ahead of the hoped-for May opening.
