Gunfire sent Memphis police scrambling to the 3100 block of Broad Avenue in Binghampton early Wednesday morning, and investigators still don't know who pulled the trigger or whether anyone was hit. Officers responded to the shooting call minutes before 5:50 a.m., according to Memphis police.
As reported by WREG, the investigation remains ongoing, and police have not determined who fired the shots or confirmed whether anyone was injured in the incident. The Memphis Police Department's Tillman Station patrol area covers roughly 24 to 26 square miles and serves more than 74,000 residents in central Memphis, according to the Memphis Police Department.
Memphis police have asked anyone with information to call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH. The organization accepts anonymous tips, may offer cash rewards, and assigns callers a secret identification number, per CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County.
A Historic Corridor With a Complicated Recent Past
Broad Avenue wasn't always the kind of place associated with gunfire calls. The corridor served as Binghampton's main commercial strip before the early-2000s Sam Cooper Boulevard extension diverted traffic away, which led to a revitalization push starting in the late 2000s that turned it into Memphis's first designated mixed-use arts district, according to Common Ground. Today the strip features artisan shops and restaurants, making any public safety incident there carry extra weight for a neighborhood that has worked to rebuild its identity.
Wednesday's shooting isn't the first violent incident recorded near the arts district. Memphis police previously investigated a July 2024 shooting on the 600 block of Baltic Street near Summer Avenue, adjacent to the Broad Avenue district, which left a man critically injured, the station's report noted. That incident also began with an overnight call, with officers responding to the Baltic Street scene shortly before 1:30 a.m.
Binghampton Has Seen a String of Violent Incidents This Year
The neighborhood has had a rough stretch in 2026. Hoodline previously reported on a nonfatal shooting on Jackson Avenue that left a man critical with the gunman still unidentified, and also covered a Red Oak Street shooting in which a bystander caught in the crossfire of an argument was shot in the leg. In August, federal and local officers with the Memphis Safe Task Force arrested a 19-year-old suspect on a first-degree murder charge following a fatal shooting on Faxon Avenue in the Binghampton/Highland Heights area, according to the U.S. Marshals Service, with the suspect located and taken into custody during a targeted traffic stop.
That same multi-agency task force, which includes 33 federal, state, and local agencies, recorded 13,020 arrests and recovered more than 2,100 firearms as of September 24, 2026, per the Marshals Service. Separately, Memphis police arrested a 31-year-old woman on a second-degree murder charge after a fatal stabbing in the 200 block of West Red Oaks Drive in Binghampton in September, as reported by WATN-TV via localmemphis.com, after the victim succumbed to his injuries following transport to a hospital.
The Broad Avenue case remains an open question for investigators, with no suspect named and no confirmation of injuries as the probe continues.
