A Collin County jury has convicted 37-year-old Michael Angel Garcia of Prosper on charges of continuous sexual assault of a child under 14 and sexual assault of a child, and a judge handed down a 50-year prison sentence without the possibility of parole. Garcia, who coached the victim as her longtime youth softball coach, sexually assaulted her from the time she was six years old until she was fourteen, according to prosecutors.
Jury Convicts Longtime Youth Coach
District Attorney Greg Willis announced the verdict and sentence, saying a Collin County jury convicted Garcia of both charges, according to the Collin County District Attorney's Office. Garcia was sentenced to 50 years in prison without parole on the continuous-sexual-abuse charge and received a concurrent 20-year sentence on the sexual-assault charge, meaning the sentences will run together rather than back to back. Judge Richard Davis presided over the trial and assessed the sentence, the DA's office says.
Willis said Garcia abused the child for years, starting when she was six and continuing until she became pregnant with his child. “Those who abuse children while in a position of trust will be held accountable,” Willis said, according to the same office's announcement.
Pregnancy Discovery Triggered Police Report
The case broke open after the child's family and medical staff contacted police on August 25, 2025, after learning the child was pregnant. DNA testing later confirmed Garcia was the father of the baby, prosecutors say. The child was subsequently taken to the Children's Advocacy Center of Collin County for a forensic interview, where she disclosed years of abuse.
Prosper Police Detective Seth Cockerham executed a search warrant at Garcia's home and collected DNA evidence consistent with the child's outcry, per the DA's account. Additional evidence supporting the outcry was found on Garcia's phone, including searches about how to terminate a pregnancy, the office notes.
Arrest Came After Attempted Flight to Mexico
Garcia was apprehended in Hillsboro, Texas, while attempting to flee to Mexico, according to the district attorney's office. Separate reporting from CBS News Texas indicates that Prosper police tracked Garcia's vehicle using license plate reader cameras and monitored his movements until an arrest warrant was obtained. He was ultimately arrested on Interstate 35 in Hillsboro by Hill County Sheriff's Office deputies, that station reported.
The station also reported that the Prosper Baseball Softball Association terminated Garcia's coaching role after his arrest and notified the families he had coached. Additional coverage from FOX 4 News had also detailed the arrest at the time.
Prosecution Team and Case Support
Assistant District Attorneys Allison Barber and Ashleigh Woodall prosecuted the case, with District Attorney Investigator Sarah Putman and Victim Assistance Coordinator Melissa White assisting the prosecution, according to the Collin County District Attorney's Office. The announcement was shared under the office's “Justice Delivered” section, which highlights case outcomes from the district attorney.
