A stretch of Northwood Hills Drive in Raleigh was taped off Sunday afternoon after deputies responded to a shooting. The sheriff's office said deputies provided medical aid and transported the victim to Regional One Health in critical condition.

Deputies roped off a large area in the 4500 block of Northwood Hills Drive as they worked the scene, according to WREG, which first reported the shooting and credited Bob Springfield for a photo from the scene. The outlet reported the shooting happened Sunday afternoon and said the sheriff's office reported the victim was transported to Regional One Health in critical condition; WREG also reported that the victim's condition was unknown at the time of its report. The sheriff's office has not released information about a possible suspect.

A Block With a Familiar, Troubling History

This is not the first time deputies have been called to this exact stretch of road. On May 22, 2025, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting at a home in the same 4500 block of Northwood Hills Drive, where a male victim was transported to Regional One Hospital with non-critical injuries and one suspect was detained, according to prior Hoodline reporting. It is not yet known whether Sunday's shooting took place at the same residence.

A drunk driver smashed into a downtown parking garage. In June 2016, a resident in the neighboring 4400 block of Longtree Drive was shot and killed outside his home after confronting burglary suspects who had cut power to the residence to disable its security system, according to CrimeStoppers of Memphis and Shelby County.

Sunday's Raleigh Response

Sheriff's deputies responded to Sunday's shooting in Raleigh.

The sheriff's office that responded Sunday is now under new leadership. Anthony J. Buckner was sworn in as the 48th Sheriff of Shelby County on August 31, 2026, succeeding Floyd Bonner Jr. after serving as chief deputy and spending more than 23 years with the department, according to Shelby County government records.

Countywide Numbers Tell a Different Story

The Northwood Hills shooting comes even as broader crime data shows improvement across Shelby County. Major violent crime across the county dropped 30.4 percent during the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, according to data released in July by the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission. The same figures showed the county's violent crime rate for the first six months of 2026 fell 8.7 percent below 2011 levels, which had previously stood as the lowest recorded rate in recent county history.

The victim was transported to Regional One Health in critical condition, according to the sheriff's office.
