A 34-year-old Rochester man is recovering after showing up at St. Mary's Hospital with a gunshot wound to his lower body, prompting a police investigation into where and how the shooting happened. Officers responded to the hospital around 1:45 p.m. after a report of the walk-in victim, and the man was later transferred to Strong Memorial Hospital for further treatment.
According to WHEC, the man was shot at least once in his lower body in the area of Maple and Child streets, though investigators have not confirmed that location. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening, and the 34-year-old was found already at the hospital receiving treatment when officers arrived, the station reports.
As RochesterFirst reports, the man was being treated for at least one gunshot wound to his lower body before he was moved to Strong Memorial Hospital. Investigators believe the shooting may have occurred near Maple Street and Child Street, but the outlet notes that the exact location and circumstances remain unconfirmed as police continue to piece together what happened. The 13WHAM report that first surfaced this case similarly describes investigators working to pin down the precise site and sequence of events.
Police Still Determining Where and How It Happened
Beyond the preliminary location near Maple and Child streets, the circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation.
This is not the only recent case in which a gunshot victim turned up at a Rochester-area hospital without police first learning of a shooting scene. In a separate incident, per the same type of walk-in report, an 18-year-old arrived at Rochester General Hospital with a lower-body gunshot wound after a private car dropped him off, with the hospital notifying police around 10:30 p.m.; that teen was expected to survive, and officers were left trying to determine where he had been shot, according to WHEC's reporting on that case. And in another unrelated incident near the same part of the city, a shooting during a Fourth of July gathering at Texas and Child streets, near Lyell Avenue, left a victim in his 20s with multiple lower-body gunshot wounds; he was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital and underwent surgery before his condition improved from life-threatening to non-life-threatening, WHEC reported in its coverage of that separate shooting.
Shootings Have Been Trending Down Citywide
The latest hospital walk-in comes as Rochester's overall shooting numbers have continued to fall. The city reported 79 shootings resulting in injury or death between January and August of this year, 25% fewer than during the same eight-month stretch in 2025, according to lohud.com.
Those declines track with a broader multi-year trend. The number of people shot in Rochester dropped from 419 in 2021 to 162 in 2025, WXXI News reports, while the Rochester Police Department recorded 36 homicides in 2025, eleven fewer than the year before. Twenty-four people were shot to death in the city last year, per the same report, and aggravated assaults fell to 828 in 2025 from a 2021 high of 990 — though that figure still sits above the decade-low of 602 logged in 2016.
For now, the circumstances surrounding Saturday afternoon's shooting near Maple and Child streets remain under investigation, and police have not released additional details about how the 34-year-old came to be shot.
