Roper St. Francis Healthcare has launched a nearly 40-foot clinic on wheels aimed squarely at Lowcountry residents who struggle to reach a hospital or doctor's office. The new vehicle, called Mobile Care for You, is outfitted with exam rooms, lab space and a wheelchair lift, and it is designed to roll into communities across seven South Carolina counties that have long faced gaps in routine healthcare access.
The unit will travel throughout Berkeley, Charleston, Dorchester, Williamsburg, Horry, Georgetown and Colleton counties, according to WCBD News 2. Onboard services include primary and preventive care, health screenings, vaccinations, HIV and STI testing, and preventive dental care, and insurance is not required to be seen, per live5news.com. As WCIV reports, the vehicle also offers HIV services, STI testing and preventive dental care alongside its primary-care offerings.
A Program Built Around Access, Not Desire
Tawana Philpott Brown, program director of the Roper St. Francis Health Services Center, said the mobile unit was created to address healthcare access challenges that are especially acute in rural areas, per WCIV. She said access, rather than a lack of desire for care, is the greatest barrier facing many residents, according to the same report.
Joseph DeLeon said Mobile Care for You advances Roper St. Francis Healthcare's 2030 strategic plan and expands access to quality care, per WCIV's account. He added that bringing care directly into communities can remove barriers and connect more people with needed services and resources, the outlet reported.
Funding, Partnerships and What's Inside
The unit was funded in part through savings generated by the federal 340B drug pricing program, according to WCIV. Roper St. Francis Healthcare has also partnered with MUSC, and the two are expanding access to preventive dental services in underserved communities, the outlet noted.
News outlets differ slightly on the vehicle's exact size: live5news.com describes it as nearly 40 feet long, while an earlier description from Roper St. Francis Healthcare put a mobile unit at 38 feet. Either way, the rig packs in two exam rooms, laboratory space, a patient intake area and a wheelchair lift, according to WCBD News 2. Regular on-the-road appointments are expected to begin in spring 2027, and people will be able to find the unit's schedule through Roper St. Francis's website, social media and QR codes, live5news.com reported.
Addressing a Statewide Rural Gap
About 32 percent of South Carolina's residents live in rural areas, according to the South Carolina Office of Rural Health, and transportation and distance can make it hard for some residents to reach a provider for routine or preventive care, WCBD News 2 noted. The South Carolina Center for Rural and Primary Healthcare coordinates the state's broader mobile health unit network, which is meant to increase access to preventive and diagnostic care for rural, uninsured and underserved populations.
Roper St. Francis Healthcare, based in Ladson, South Carolina, already operates a separate Mobile Health Unit that runs two to four days a week at rotating sites across Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties, offering basic primary care, preventive screenings, health education and referrals, according to Roper St. Francis Healthcare. That existing unit requires patients to be at least 18 years old. With Mobile Care for You now added to the fleet, the health system says it plans to keep expanding access to medical, dental and supportive services in rural Lowcountry communities in the months ahead.
