Sacramento County sheriff's deputies fired their weapons at a man Sunday in the 4000 block of Marconi Avenue, according to the sheriff's office. A caller had reported a man with a gun in his lap outside a car wash and believed he matched the description of someone who had shot at the caller the previous night. Deputies woke the man and ordered him to put down his gun; he complied, then reached for it again, and deputies fired. He was taken to a hospital and died; no deputies were hurt.

The shooting was first reported by KCRA, which said a caller reported a man with a gun in his lap outside a car wash and believed he matched the description of someone who had shot at the caller the previous night. Deputies woke the man and ordered him to put down his gun; after he complied, he reached for it again and deputies shot him. He was taken to a hospital and died, and no deputies were hurt.

What Happened Before the Shooting

As of Sunday, the deputy's identity and assignment had not been released. A caller reported a man with a gun in his lap outside a car wash and believed he matched the description of someone who had shot at the caller the previous night. The sheriff's office said the call came around 11 a.m.; deputies woke the man and ordered him to put down his gun. He complied, then reached for it again, and deputies fired. The three deputies involved were placed on administrative leave.

Investigators had not determined whether Sunday's shooting was related to a separate shooting the previous night.

A Corridor With a History of Shootings

Marconi Avenue has been the site of deputy-involved gunfire before. In one earlier case, deputies responded to the Sienna Square Apartments at 4735 Marconi Avenue around 5:30 p.m. after reports that a man was firing bullets from his apartment, according to the Sacramento Bee. That man was shot in an exchange of gunfire with three deputies during an hourslong standoff and later died at a hospital, the Bee reported, though it remains unclear how many bullets were fired, who shot first, or whether the man pointed his gun at the deputies.

Sacramento County deputies have also opened fire in other parts of the county in recent months. A deputy fatally shot a man accused of stabbing two women near Diablo Drive and Woodforest Drive, north of Elkhorn Boulevard, in an incident that also left two people injured while officers were reported safe, per KCRA's earlier reporting.

Vehicle Stop Shooting Earlier This Year

In February, two Sacramento County sheriff's deputies shot a man during a vehicle stop in the Vineyard neighborhood of south Sacramento. That shooting happened just after 7:30 p.m. along southbound Elk Grove Florin Road at Tiogawoods Drive, south of Gerber Road, the Sacramento Bee reported. Both deputies fired on the man, who was hospitalized in unknown condition; neither deputy was injured, according to the same account.

The man was taken to a hospital and died, and no deputies were hurt. Hoodline will update this story as the sheriff's office and local news crews on scene release more information.
