A man allegedly attacked his neighbor with a machete in San Jose on Sunday morning, according to police, sending the victim to the hospital and triggering a standoff after the suspect retreated into his own home and refused to come out.
Officers responded to the 1800 block of Naples Drive around 9:07 a.m. after receiving a report of a disturbance involving a weapon, according to Telemundo Área de la Bahía. Police said the man attacked his neighbor with a machete before returning home, as reported by CBS News Bay Area. The victim was taken to the hospital, per the same outlet's reporting.
Suspect Remains Inside Residence
Rather than fleeing the scene, the man reportedly went back into his own house and refused to leave, turning the response into a standoff on the quiet residential block. Telemundo's report notes that the suspect ingresó a su propia vivienda y se rehúsa a salir — entered his own home and is refusing to come out. Officials said the investigation remained ongoing, according to the outlet's reporting, with no further details released on how the situation inside the home was being resolved.
Key questions remain unanswered as of Sunday. The identity and age of the suspect have not been released, nor has the extent of the victim's injuries beyond the confirmation that he was hospitalized. It also hasn't been made clear whether the man was eventually taken into custody, surrendered, or remained barricaded, and no charges have been announced.
Not the First Machete Scare in San Jose
Sunday's incident is at least the second machete-related case to rattle San Jose neighborhoods in recent memory. In one earlier case, a food delivery driver named Jerry Gonzales told KTVU that another driver smashed his car window with a machete during a road-rage confrontation near Blossom Hill Road and Snell Avenue. Gonzales said the driver got out of his car and came at him with the weapon after Gonzales had followed and cornered the vehicle, and he later turned over dashcam footage of the encounter to police.
San Jose has also seen standoffs tied to weapons violence end in arrests. In a separate case, 32-year-old John Torres Jr. was arrested following a standoff with San Jose police after he was wanted in connection with a violent assault at a large apartment complex on The Woods Drive, according to KRON4. Police said Torres was armed with a gun when he attacked and repeatedly assaulted a victim, who was treated for injuries at a hospital and survived, the station reported.
No such resolution has been confirmed in Sunday's Naples Drive case. Police have not said how long the standoff lasted or how it concluded, and the investigation remained active as of the latest update.
