Campbell police have arrested 46-year-old San Jose resident Daniel Jermain White in connection with a burglary that gutted a local hair salon of nearly $100,000 worth of merchandise.
A Salon Stripped Bare
The case dates back to September 17, when Goddess Hair Bar was burglarized. Surveillance footage reviewed by NBC Bay Area captured two thieves entering the salon, disabling a security camera, and leaving with bags full of supplies. The break-in happened during the early morning hours while the owner was out of town and no one was working, according to the station, and the salon's own security system failed to notify police of the intrusion.
The thieves made off with the salon's entire inventory, including hair, retail products, professional tools and everyday supplies, NBC Bay Area reported. KRON4 put the total loss at close to $100,000 in hair extensions and equipment, with a single cabinet of hair extensions alone valued at approximately $48,000, according to the station's report. Days after the burglary, police said investigators were actively working to identify those responsible, per the same account.
Cameras and Detective Work Lead to a Suspect
Campbell detectives eventually identified Daniel Jermain White as a suspect, using the city's public safety camera network and other investigative resources to build the case, according to the City of Campbell Police Department. Investigators noted that a vehicle connected to the suspect displayed a stolen license plate. Police also said White was on probation at the time for prior offenses involving firearms, drug sales, stolen vehicles and evading law enforcement.
On October 15, detectives arrested White with assistance from the Santa Clara County Specialized Enforcement Team. Police said the arrest was related to the burglary.
Search Turns Up Stolen Hair and Others' Documents
A search of White's residence uncovered packaged hair extensions, drug paraphernalia and personal identifying documents belonging to other people, including passports and driver's licenses, according to Campbell police. Investigators also said White possessed methamphetamine suspected to be intended for sale. Campbell police detectives said they will continue investigating whether White may be connected to other crimes in the area.
Part of a Broader Surveillance Push
The arrest comes as Campbell leans more heavily on networked surveillance to crack retail and property crimes. The department's camera-sharing program allows businesses to share live security footage with police once they call 911, with the option to keep feeds connected continuously, according to San José Spotlight. The outlet reported that Campbell police responded to 114 organized retail thefts costing nearly $225,000 between October 2023 and June, and that the program, which runs on Georgia-based Axon Fusus technology under Capt. Ian White, could eventually expand to cover school systems as well.
Campbell has seen other brazen retail burglaries in recent memory. Thieves rammed a stolen Honda through the front gate of San Jose Camera & Video, making off with about $65,000 worth of digital camera bodies and lenses, according to KTVU. That store had also been robbed in January 2023, when an employee was shot and thieves stole thousands of dollars in equipment, the station reported. The store reopened Friday.
