A pedestrian is dead after a motorcycle struck him while he was crossing South Bascom Avenue near Fruitdale Avenue in San Jose early Saturday morning, police say. The motorcycle driver was also hospitalized with life-threatening injuries but has since been stabilized, while the pedestrian did not survive.
San Jose police responded at approximately 1:26 a.m. on Oct. 24 to the crash near South Bascom and Fruitdale avenues, according to kron4.com. Police said a 2024 Kawasaki motorcycle, driven by an adult male, was traveling southbound on South Bascom Avenue, north of the Fruitdale intersection, when it struck an adult male pedestrian who was crossing the avenue in an unknown direction. Both men were taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, per the same report.
The driver was later stabilized, but the pedestrian died from his injuries, police said. His identity has not been released by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner, and authorities have not said what caused the crash or specified exactly when the pedestrian died. As San Francisco Chronicle staff writer Sarah Brager reported, authorities have released no information about the circumstances leading up to the crash or whether drugs or alcohol played a role.
A Grim Milestone for San Jose's Streets
The crash marks San Jose's 42nd fatal collision and 42nd traffic-related death of the year, as well as the city's 20th pedestrian death of 2026, according to the kron4.com report. The San Francisco Chronicle noted that San Jose police reported four other traffic fatalities so far this month, including one involving a pedestrian hit by a car near South King Road and Biscayne Way.
That South King Road and Biscayne Way crash happened on Sept. 13, when a vehicle struck an adult male pedestrian who was crossing outside a marked crosswalk, according to a San Jose Police Department news release. That pedestrian was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and died from them on Oct. 2. In that case, the driver stayed at the scene, called 911 and cooperated with investigators, and the preliminary investigation did not identify drugs or alcohol as a factor.
San Jose has also seen other recent pedestrian deaths. A man was fatally struck in a hit-and-run near South Bascom Avenue and Borello Drive on a Sunday, and authorities separately investigated a fatal vehicle strike near Story Road and King Road, according to ktvu.com.
A Years-Long Push to Cut Traffic Deaths
The totals for 2026 come after San Jose had posted back-to-back years of declining traffic deaths. San Jose traffic fatalities totaled 41 in 2025, down 16% from 49 in 2024 and the lowest figure the city had seen since 2012, according to sanjosespotlight.com. The San Francisco Chronicle, however, reported that San Jose recorded 40 traffic fatalities in 2025 — a discrepancy the dossier does not resolve between the two outlets' figures.
San Jose Spotlight reported that 2025 marked the second straight year of declines after fatalities peaked at 63 in 2022, while pedestrian deaths held roughly steady at 20 that year. The city's police department has said it historically sees a high percentage of auto-pedestrian fatal collisions, and that in most of those cases the pedestrian was jaywalking or crossing mid-block rather than at a signal-controlled intersection, according to sjpd.org.
San Jose launched its Vision Zero program in 2015 with the goal of eliminating all traffic deaths by 2040, per San Jose Spotlight's reporting. The city council also voted last year to lower posted speed limits along 18 roadways as part of that broader safety push.
