A 17-year-old boy was arrested in connection with a Sept. 2 robbery at the San Leandro Marina, where a man was robbed at gunpoint of a $1,000 pendant depicting Jesus Christ, authorities said.
According to The Mercury News, the robbery happened around 6:30 p.m. at the marina, when a person carrying a gun confronted the victim and made off with the pendant. Investigators said they used license plate readers to trace the suspect's car back to a 25-year-old Oakland woman, a break that would ultimately point them toward the teenage suspect.
The Oakland stop and the investigation
On Sept. 4, Oakland police stopped the woman’s Honda, according to East Bay Times. The 17-year-old was in the front passenger seat, and officers found a handgun in the car, the outlet reported.
The woman had separately been reported as the victim of a domestic violence incident in San Leandro involving her boyfriend. She identified the boyfriend as a 20-year-old man, the East Bay Times reported; police later identified the 17-year-old in her car as the boyfriend connected to that report.
Photo identification and arrest
The robbery victim later identified the 17-year-old in a photo lineup, according to East Bay Times. Police arrested him in connection with the robbery, but it remains unclear whether a charge was filed.
What juvenile-record confidentiality means
The Judicial Branch of California says juvenile case files are confidential. That general rule does not establish whether a charge was filed or what court proceedings may have taken place in this case.
San Leandro police announced the arrest on social media, posting on X that the department had made an “arrest on robbery.” Beyond that statement, authorities have not released additional details about the case or the status of any charges.
