Local outlet KSRO reported that a search warrant near Stony Point Road led to weapons.
Both Gilbert brothers were charged with possession of an assault weapon under Penal Code 30605, possession of a destructive device under Penal Code 18710, and possession of an undetectable firearm under Penal Code 24610. Casey Gilbert faced additional charges: felon in possession of a firearm under Penal Code 29800(a)(1), felon in possession of ammunition under Penal Code 30305(a)(1), and violation of pretrial services under Penal Code 166(a)(4). Police said Casey Gilbert was on felony pretrial services at the time of the search and was prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition under those release conditions.
The Grenade That Brought in the Bomb Squad
The Sonoma County Sheriff's Bomb Squad operates as a regional Explosive Ordnance Disposal team that responds to hazardous device calls and renders them inert across Sonoma County jurisdictions, per Petaluma360.
California Penal Code 18710 makes possession of a destructive device a public offense punishable by up to one year in county jail or state prison, with a fine of up to $10,000, under Justia. Penal Code 24610 covers manufacturing and possessing, among other acts, firearms that go undetected by walk-through metal detectors, per Shouse Law Group.
Felony Status Added Extra Charges for One Brother
Penal Code 30305(a)(1) separately bars prohibited individuals from controlling ammunition or magazines, with prosecutors not required to recover an actual firearm to secure a conviction under that section.
Possessing an illegal assault weapon is also a wobbler under Penal Code 30605, meaning the Sonoma County District Attorney's Office has discretion to pursue it as a felony carrying up to three years in county jail under Penal Code 1170(h), depending on prior records and evidentiary findings.
Part of a Broader Push Against Illegal Guns
The raid fits into a wider enforcement pattern the Santa Rosa Police Department has built since 2021, when it formed its Special Enforcement Team specifically to target rising gun violence. In 2024 alone, SET conducted 1,373 field events, made 111 arrests, and seized 41 firearms, including six ghost guns, according to the department. The department's reinstated Gang Crimes Team has run a parallel effort, executing 151 search warrants and seizing 82 firearms — including 19 assault weapons and four 3D printers — in 2024.
Stony Point Road has seen other weapons cases before. Hoodline previously reported on a 2024 traffic stop weapons bust near the same corridor, where officers seized an automatic weapon from a 19-year-old suspect.
