A one-year-old Rottweiler/German shepherd mix was struck and killed Monday morning in a hit-and-run crash near Shore Terrace in Seaside, Oregon, and the driver who hit the dog has now been identified after initially fleeing the scene without stopping.
The crash was reported at about 7:15 a.m. near North Wahanna Road, according to KATU. The dog died from its injuries after being struck, and the driver left the scene without stopping to render aid or exchange information.
In the hours after the crash, Seaside police zeroed in on a specific vehicle description to help track down whoever was behind the wheel. Investigators said they were looking for a 2009 or 2010 Toyota Corolla S or XRS with damage to the front passenger side, after a piece of the vehicle's bumper was left behind at the scene, per the same KATU report.
Driver Comes Forward After Public Appeal
Police shared details of the crash on social media Tuesday. The driver later came forward.
It also remains unclear whether the driver is facing any citation. The station's report notes that whether the driver had been cited in the crash was not disclosed, leaving that question open as of this writing.
What Oregon Law Could Require of Drivers
Oregon has at times considered legislative language addressing a driver's obligations after striking a domestic animal. Introduced measure text on file with the Oregon Legislative Information System states that a driver whose vehicle injures or kills a domestic animal and who fails to perform all listed duties commits an offense, though that document reflects introduced measure language rather than confirmed current law.
Separate proposed amendment language, also on file with the Oregon Legislative Information System, includes a duty to immediately stop the vehicle at the scene when it injures or kills a domestic animal. That text, too, is identified only as proposed amendment language, and it does not establish that the provision was ultimately enacted.
For now, the core facts of the Seaside case are that a young dog died, the driver fled before later coming forward, and police made a public appeal for information.
