Two drivers shot each other during a road rage confrontation in Clark County early Thursday morning, leaving both men hospitalized with serious wounds and no one in custody as investigators pieced together what sparked the gunfire. The shooting happened just after 6 a.m., according to authorities, turning a routine morning commute into a crime scene that shut down a stretch of highway for hours.
According to the Springfield News-Sun, the shooting occurred near State Route 54 and U.S. 40 in South Vienna, though other outlets placed the scene elsewhere. WHIO reported the shooting happened around 6:15 a.m. in the area of State Route 54 and East National Road, while WDTN said officers were dispatched to East National Road and South Urbana Street, near Northeastern Local Schools. The exact location has not been confirmed across reports, but the underlying facts of the shooting itself are consistent: two drivers ended up exchanging gunfire after some kind of dispute on the road.
Clark County Sheriff Chris Clark said the two people involved were shooting at each other, according to the News-Sun. One driver was shot in the abdomen and the other in the chest, and Clark described the men's wounds as significant, though he said he was unsure of their conditions. Both men were initially transported to Mercy Health – Springfield for stabilization before being transferred to Miami Valley Hospital, per the same report.
Cause Still Unclear, Investigators Seeking Witnesses
Clark told the News-Sun that the cause of the confrontation remains unclear. He said everyone involved had been accounted for, and that the incident posed no danger to the public, including the nearby Northeastern school. The Clark County Sheriff's Office is now looking for witnesses and camera footage that might help investigators understand how the dispute escalated into gunfire.
State Route 54 at U.S. 40 was closed during the incident, though Clark said U.S. 40 itself remained open in both directions, the News-Sun reported. Separately, K99.1FM reported that State Route 54 and U.S. Route 40 were closed following the shooting, and that the Northeastern Local School District said its PK-12 campus was running normally with no imminent danger to students.
Second Road Rage Shooting in Clark County in Three Months
The News-Sun noted that Thursday's shooting marks the second road rage shooting in Clark County in three months. In July, a road rage dispute in New Carlisle turned fatal when 47-year-old Luke Hollifield was shot and killed in front of Casey's General Store. According to ABC6, Semaj Mack and Damian Debose were both charged with Hollifield's murder, with officials saying additional charges were pending.
Road rage shootings have also surfaced elsewhere in recent weeks. In Springdale, Ohio, a driver opened fire into another vehicle during an early morning road rage incident on Interstate 275, according to FOX19, though the reported victim was later determined to have been hurt by flying glass rather than gunfire. And outside Denver, a reported road rage shooting near Rangeview High School led to an arrest after police said an argument between two men picking up student relatives escalated into a fight and shooting, per KDVR; no injuries were reported in that case, and authorities used Flock cameras, city-owned cameras and drones to track down the suspect vehicle.
Sheriff's Advice: Turn Away, Don't Engage
Clark offered a blunt piece of advice for drivers who find themselves in a similar confrontation. He said drivers should leave a road rage situation by turning away rather than continuing the exchange, according to the News-Sun's report. With no suspects in custody and the cause of Thursday's shooting still unresolved, the sheriff's office is seeking witnesses and camera footage as the investigation moves forward.
