University of Iowa Police received a report of a sexual assault that happened overnight between Oct. 9 and Oct. 10 in an east-side residence hall, according to a campus crime alert. University officials said no additional information was available when the alert went out.
What Investigators Have Said So Far
The university's alert, posted to safety.uiowa.edu, states plainly that the incident occurred during the overnight hours on October 9 into October 10 in an east side residence hall, but stops short of naming the hall or describing what happened.
The Mighty 1630 KCJJ reported that the sexual assault was reported to University of Iowa officials, with police confirming they received the report but releasing nothing further.
A Separate West-Side Report
A separate report was also tied to a west-side residence hall.
University officials said crime alerts like these are issued to students and employees in accordance with federal law requiring colleges to disclose crime information to their campus communities, per the safety.uiowa.edu notice.
How This Fits Into a Longer Pattern at UI
Campus sexual assault reports have been a persistent concern at the University of Iowa in recent years. According to The Daily Iowan, reports of rape on campus more than doubled in 2023 compared with the previous year, though they remained lower than the numbers reported in 2021. The university recorded 96 sexual assaults in 2023 when rape and fondling cases were combined, the paper reported.
Of those 96 cases, 43 were allegedly perpetrated by a single individual over multiple years but were only reported in 2023, the Daily Iowan's reporting noted. The same report found that stalking reports at UI climbed from 87 in 2021 to 97 in 2022 and 106 in 2023. By comparison, Iowa State University logged just 11 rape and fondling cases in 2023, compared to UI's 96, according to the Daily Iowan's reporting.
When the alert went out, university officials said no additional information was available about the incident.
