A Shaker Heights High School student died Monday afternoon following what the district called an act of violence, prompting officials to cancel classes at the high school and middle school on Tuesday. Superintendent David Glasner confirmed the death and the closures in a message sent to district parents Monday evening, though no details about the victim's identity, the location of the incident, or any suspect have been released.
Superintendent Confirms Loss, Withholds Details
In a statement, the district said the student “tragically lost their life in an act of violence,” according to fox8.com. It did not share additional information about how or where the student died. “Our thoughts are with their family, and we ask that their privacy be respected during this difficult time,” Glasner said, adding, “I am deeply saddened by this loss to our school community.”
Glasner said the district is cooperating fully with law enforcement in its investigation and will provide updates as appropriate, while also stressing it will share details as soon as possible while respecting the privacy of those involved. As reported by WKYC, the station said it was still working to gather more details about what happened as of Monday night.
Classes Canceled, Counselors Called In
Classes were canceled at both Shaker Heights High School and Shaker Heights Middle School for Tuesday, Oct. 27, though students in career and technical education programs were not required to report to off-campus locations. Counselors are set to be available at the middle and high schools from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to support students and staff processing the loss. All other Shaker Heights district buildings were expected to remain open as normal on Tuesday.
Cleveland Council President Blaine Griffin said he had been in touch with police and was awaiting more information on a shooting in his ward, per fox8.com's reporting. That detail has not been independently confirmed as connected to the student's death.
A School Community Grieving Again
This is not the first time in recent memory that Shaker Heights High School has closed its doors after violence touched a student. In April 2025, the school reopened after a one-day closure following the fatal shooting of then-current student Charles Shanklin, with grief counselors on hand, according to cleveland19.com. At the time, the district said metal detectors were already in place at the high school every day as part of its standing safety protocol.
In August 2025, 17-year-old Shaker Heights High School senior Jayden Bonner was killed in a shooting in Maple Heights that also wounded two other boys, as documented by cleveland.com. Bonner was identified as a senior at the school in that reporting. Taken together, the two incidents mark a second time in roughly a year that the Shaker Heights community has had to grapple with the violent death of one of its students.
No arrests, charges, or confirmed motive have been reported in connection with Monday's death, and the location and circumstances of the incident remain unclear. The district has not said whether Tuesday's closures could be extended into later in the week.
