A person died following an officer-involved shooting late Wednesday night in Sherman, with police confirming the officer involved was not harmed and that the public faced no ongoing threat. The shooting happened around 11:15 p.m. in the 600 block of East Churchill Way, setting off an hours-long investigation that stretched into Thursday morning.
The Sherman Police Department said the shooting occurred at that time and location, according to kxii.com. Police told the station the officer involved is okay and that there is no threat to the public. The same report noted the Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into what happened.
Scene Cleared Before Dawn
Officers remained at the site on Churchill Way for hours after the shooting, and police confirmed the scene was clear as of 6:41 a.m., per the outlet's reporting. KTEN likewise identified the 600 block of East Churchill Way as the location and confirmed the Texas Rangers are heading up the investigation, a standard practice in Texas for officer-involved shootings.
Beyond the basic details released so far, much about the incident remains unknown. Police have not identified the person who died or the officer involved, and the circumstances that led to the shooting have not been made public.
Not Sherman's First Officer-Involved Shooting This Year
This is not the first time Sherman police have been involved in a shooting this year. In February, a suspect was shot after officers responded to a 9-1-1 call in the 700 block of North Kessler Boulevard, the same outlet reported at the time. In that earlier case, the Texas Department of Public Safety said the suspect was armed with an object capable of causing harm and charged toward an officer before being shot; that suspect was hospitalized in stable condition after officers administered first aid.
No such details have been released about Wednesday night's shooting on Churchill Way. The investigation remains active, and no further information has been provided about what preceded the officer's use of force.
