Gunfire sent police, fire crews and EMS converging on the 200 block of Derby Avenue near Buechel Park Thursday afternoon, after a 911 call came in just before 2 p.m. Neighbors said they heard six shots. Police found a man with gunshot wounds, and he died at UofL Hospital. His identity had not been released, and LMPD detained a person of interest.

Louisville police responded to the shooting in the Buechel neighborhood Thursday afternoon, according to WLKY, which reported that police arrived. WLKY said police found a man with gunshot wounds who died at UofL Hospital; his identity had not been released, and LMPD detained a person of interest.

The shooting was also reported by WDRB, which reported that Louisville police were investigating a reported shooting Thursday afternoon in the Buechel neighborhood. WLKY reported that the victim, a man, died at UofL Hospital and that a person of interest had been detained; the man's identity had not been released.

A Neighborhood That's Seen Gunfire Before

Thursday's shooting is not the first to rattle Buechel this year. In June, officers investigated a deadly shooting in the 2000 block of Landing Drive, also in the Buechel neighborhood, after police were called to the area around 1:55 a.m. on a report of a shooting, per WAVE 3 News.

Back in April, a man was shot in the 4600 block of Fegenbush Lane, also in Buechel, and was taken to UofL Hospital by EMS, where he was expected to survive, WAVE 3 News reported at the time. Louisville Metro Police later announced the arrest of 43-year-old Scott Hodge in connection with that shooting, according to the same report.

A Citywide Drop in Violence, With Local Exceptions

The latest Buechel incident comes even as city officials point to an overall decline in gun violence this year. So far in 2026, Louisville has seen a 23% drop in homicide victims and a 25% drop in nonfatal shooting victims compared to the same point in 2025, according to figures cited by LouisvilleKY.gov.

WLKY reported that the victim was a man who died at UofL Hospital and that police detained a person of interest. The man's identity had not been released. This remains a developing story.
