Saturday starts in NYC with temperatures in the low 60s, mostly sunny skies and north winds around 12 mph. The city should reach about 71 degrees under bright skies, before showers are expected to move in Sunday afternoon.
Sunny Saturday, Cooler Saturday Night
Sunshine and northeast winds of 8 to 12 mph make Saturday the stronger choice for outdoor plans. Skies should be mostly clear Saturday night, with temperatures falling to around 58 degrees.
Showers Arrive Sunday Afternoon
Sunday’s rain chance increases after 11 a.m. as clouds build over the city. The forecast calls for a high near 66, east winds around 10 mph and about a 60% chance of rain, with expected rainfall between a tenth and a quarter of an inch. Showers could continue into Sunday night, then end around 2 a.m.
How Rain Can Affect Combined Sewers
In neighborhoods served by combined sewers, stormwater and wastewater share a system. As general infrastructure context—not a prediction for Sunday’s showers—New York City’s Department of Environmental Protection says intense rain can exceed the system’s capacity, prompting combined stormwater and wastewater to be diverted to area waterways. DEP testimony also notes that most of the city’s land area consists of impervious surfaces, which impede stormwater absorption.
Past Downpours and Sewer Plans
A separate New York City-area storm on Sept. 29, 2023, brought 8.65 inches of rain to John F. Kennedy Airport by nightfall, surpassing the record for any September day set during Hurricane Donna in 1960, according to NPR, republished by Hawai‘i Public Radio. That was far more than the tenth to quarter inch forecast for Sunday in this article. For longer-term overflow reduction, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation records say a 2023 modification to the CSO Consent Order requires NYCDEP to reduce combined-sewer overflows by 1.67 billion gallons a year by 2040 and spend $3.5 billion on green infrastructure projects throughout the city by 2045.
Dry Stretch Returns Monday
Mostly sunny, dry weather is forecast for Monday, with a high near 71; northwest winds could strengthen later in the day. Tuesday should be sunny but cooler, with a high near 64 and a nighttime low around 49. Some northern suburbs may dip into the mid-30s, bringing a chance of frost.
Wednesday through Friday are forecast to stay mostly sunny and dry, with highs in the mid-60s to low 70s. No watches, warnings or advisories are in effect. Saturday is the weekend’s sunnier option for outdoor plans, while Sunday’s forecast includes showers.
