A driver was killed and two other people were injured early Wednesday when two cars collided head-on in the 3300 block of Southern Avenue SE in Southeast Washington, D.C. Police say a 2003 Toyota Camry crossed into oncoming traffic and slammed into a 2012 Toyota Prius.
Crash Details
According to dcnewsnow.com, the driver of the Camry, 34-year-old Bobby Price, was pronounced dead at the hospital, while the two other occupants involved — one from the Camry and a passenger in the Prius — suffered non-life-threatening injuries. But the linked WJLA story, headlined “Woman killed in Southeast DC car crash,” concerns a separate three-vehicle collision on Mississippi Avenue and Wheeler Road.
Officers responded to the crash around 12:08 a.m. Wednesday, per the dcnewsnow.com report. Investigators said the Camry was traveling southbound on Southern Avenue when it crossed into the opposite lane and struck the Prius head-on, a collision serious enough to send two people to the hospital with injuries described only as non-life-threatening.
Another Deadly Crash Nearby Months Earlier
The Southern Avenue corridor has seen fatal crashes before. In July, a two-vehicle crash at Suitland Road and Southern Avenue SE — just blocks from Wednesday's scene — left an adult man dead and another person injured. The Metropolitan Police Department said officers first responded to that crash around 6 p.m., with one victim taken to a hospital for treatment of unknown injuries while the second, an adult male, was pronounced dead on the scene, according to the same WJLA report.
A Corridor With a History of Serious Wrecks
Southeast D.C.'s stretch of roads near Wheeler Road, Mississippi Avenue and Southern Avenue has repeatedly turned up in crash investigations. The Metropolitan Police Department's Major Crash Investigations Unit investigated a traffic fatality in the 4200 block of Wheeler Road, Southeast, following a crash in late November 2021, and a separate fatal crash was investigated in the 3300 block of Wheeler Road that December. More recently, a Metrobus crash at Wheeler Road and Mississippi Avenue SE in April 2025 left 13 people with non-life-threatening injuries, nine of whom were hospitalized, WJLA reported at the time.
City data support the sense that this is a persistent problem area. The Washington Informer has reported that more than half of D.C.'s traffic fatalities have occurred in Wards 7 and 8, where this stretch of Southeast falls. The District launched its Vision Zero initiative under Mayor Muriel Bowser in 2015, aiming to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries citywide, according to the Washington Informer.
Safety Improvements Already Underway
The District Department of Transportation has targeted Mississippi Avenue SE specifically for traffic-calming upgrades. DDOT has said it expects the added measures, part of a protected bikeway and safety improvement project, to lower average vehicle speeds and help preserve a safer environment for cyclists, children and pedestrians along the corridor.
No details have been released about the identities of the two injured victims from Wednesday's crash, nor has MPD indicated whether any citations or charges have resulted from the investigation.
