Balboa Park is getting a free, all-ages block party this month courtesy of two of the biggest corporate sponsors behind the country's 250th birthday push. Sip, Soar & Celebrate San Diego, presented by Southwest Airlines and Coca-Cola, takes over Plaza de Panama on Saturday, October 24, from noon to 4 p.m., with no tickets or RSVP required to attend.

San Diego isn't just any stop on the America250 circuit — it's one of only two U.S. cities picked for this joint Southwest and Coca-Cola activation. According to a City of San Diego planning document, the Balboa Park gathering follows an earlier activation in Hawaii. As reported by KPBS, the San Diego event centers on Plaza de Panama and is open to all ages with no cost to attend.

Games, Floats, and Friar Photo-Ops

The afternoon features three carnival games tied to the patriotic theme: a “Let Freedom Ring!” bottle ring toss, “Pop. Fizz. Plinko!”, and “Stars, Stripes, and Strikes!” inflatable bowling, per the same city planning document. Players collect tickets at each station to trade in for prizes at a merchandise booth on site.

Per KPBS, families can also grab Cherry Coke Zero Sugar floats, browse local food trucks, and snap photos with both the Coca-Cola polar bear and the Padres Friar. A giant community mural that kids can help color rounds out the hands-on activities, and the city's planning document notes the entrance archway was designed with a bubble machine to greet arriving families. Organizers also built in an America250 swing set adapted from the San Diego Food & Wine festival and a live set from a local DJ for atmosphere.

The floats come from a San Diego small business. Stella Jean's Ice Cream was co-founded in the University Heights neighborhood in 2018 by husband duo Steven Torres and Chef Gan Suebsarakham.

Getting There and Parking Logistics

Balboa Park's grounds stay open 24 hours a day, though the event itself runs only from noon to 4 p.m. at the park's address on El Prado, according to KPBS. Visitors driving in should plan around the park's parking setup: La Jolla Mom notes that while a tiered parking fee structure took effect in January 2026, free parking is still available at Lower Inspiration Point, with a free electric tram running every 10 to 15 minutes directly to Plaza de Panama. That temporary fee system is slated to disappear entirely on January 1, 2027.

Forever Balboa Park is a nonprofit formed when Friends of Balboa Park and the Balboa Park Conservancy officially merged on July 1, 2021. The organization partners with the city and runs the visitor center, which is tucked inside the National Historic Landmark House of Hospitality building and assists more than 500,000 visitors a year, per KPBS.

Plaza de Panama's History

Plaza de Panama has hosted milestone gatherings, including events during the 1915 Panama-California Exposition, which drew Thomas Edison and Henry Ford to the square, as reported by the Times of San Diego. During Edison's 1915 visit, he was reportedly greeted in the plaza by 12,000 San Diego schoolchildren who showered his car with flowers.

As with any large public event, organizers note that dates and times are subject to change without notice. Balboa Park remains home to 15 major museums and is billed as the nation's largest urban cultural park, making Plaza de Panama a fitting stage for a celebration meant to mark the country's quarter-millennium.
