A vacant lot on Estrada Drive in East El Paso is about to become a new telecommunications hub for Spectrum, with construction plans calling for a 1,750-square-foot facility designed to serve homes, businesses and emergency services across the area. The project, valued at $1.3 million, will rise between Benji's Tattoo Parlor and Super Snacks, directly across the street from an Albertson's and a Planet Fitness at Montwood Square.
The address, 1840 Estrada Drive, places the hub near Trawood Drive and George Dieter Drive, not far from Gwada Soul, the El Paso Public Library's Irving Schwartz Branch, and Mi Pueblito Cafe, according to El Paso Times. City permit records list Spectrum Gulf Coast LLC as the project owner, while Luke Poirier of Lakeshore Construction Group LLC, based in Manistee, Michigan, is named as the applicant. The city's site does not list a contractor for the job, and the outlet notes that the applicant and the eventual contractor should not be assumed to be the same entity.
Spectrum's Growing Footprint in the Borderland
Spectrum operates as a brand of Charter Communications, a company that traces its expansion back to mergers with regional operators in the early 1980s, the El Paso Times reports. Today Spectrum counts more than 32 million customers across 41 states, making it one of the largest providers of internet, mobile, TV and voice service in the country.
The East El Paso hub follows a pattern of Spectrum investment in the region. Back in 2022, the company switched on a fiber-optic network reaching more than 1,230 homes and small businesses in rural parts of El Paso County, according to El Paso Inc. That buildout gave customers access to download speeds as high as 1 Gbps, part of a broader push the outlet tied to Charter's $5 billion investment to connect rural communities nationwide.
More Expansion Could Be on the Way
At the time of that 2022 rollout, Spectrum indicated additional locations in El Paso County would follow in the coming months, along with sites across the state line in Doña Ana County, per the same El Paso Inc. report. Corporate materials from Charter Communications have also pointed to broader fiber expansion in El Paso County, though those company statements carry lower confidence than the locally reported figures.
For now, the most concrete details about the Estrada Drive project remain what's listed on the city's permitting records: a $1.3 million build, a 1,750-square-foot footprint, and a stated purpose of serving homes, businesses and emergency responders in East El Paso. No completion date or opening timeline has been made public, and questions about zoning, financing and final construction status remain unanswered for now.
