A driver was killed early Saturday morning after a speeding Mercedes ran off Blue Parkway in Kansas City, careened down an embankment and slammed into a tree before coming to rest in a ravine. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and police had not released the person's identity as of Saturday afternoon.

According to KCTV5, emergency crews were called around 1:10 a.m. Saturday to Blue Parkway south of East 87th Street for a reported crash. The Kansas City Police Department said a red Mercedes was speeding east on Blue Parkway when the driver failed to negotiate a curve and veered off the right side of the road, per FOX4KC.

Car Went Down Embankment Into Ravine

Once off the roadway, the car traveled down a steep embankment, struck a large tree and stopped in a ravine, the outlet's report notes. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. No further information, including the driver's identity, had been released as investigators continued working the case.

The crash investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not said what led the driver to lose control of the vehicle beyond the speed and curve detailed in the initial report. KCPD has not indicated whether anyone else was in the car at the time.

A Rising Count of Fatal Crashes in 2026

KCPD said the wreck marked the 57th fatal crash it has investigated so far in 2026, compared with 54 at the same point in 2025, the same account states. That uptick comes even as statewide numbers have trended in the other direction: the Missouri Department of Transportation reported 402 traffic fatalities statewide in the first and second quarters of 2026, a decrease of 24 compared with the same period in 2025.

City leaders have also pointed to broader progress on road safety. A report examined by KCUR found that Kansas City traffic deaths dropped 30% in 2025 as part of the city's Vision Zero road-safety effort. Saturday's fatality nonetheless adds to a stretch of serious wrecks reported along the same corridor in recent years.

Blue Parkway's History of Serious Wrecks

Police investigated another fatal rollover crash near Blue Parkway and Blue Ridge on Friday evening, July 24, 2020, when investigators said a gray Lexus was traveling at a high rate of speed before the crash, according to KMBC. A separate KMBC report also described a person who died days after being seriously injured in a fiery rollover crash in Kansas City. Years earlier, in August 2019, The Kansas City Star reported that one person was killed and two others injured in a head-on crash near 59th Street and Blue Parkway.

No citations or charges connected to Saturday's crash have been announced, and the cause remains under investigation. Police have not released the driver's name, age or any details about the vehicle's ownership.
