A 53-year-old woman died after a speeding pickup truck struck her while she was crossing the street in a crosswalk on San Antonio's North Side late Saturday night, and the driver took off without stopping to help. San Antonio police say no arrests have been made and the driver remains unidentified.

Officers were called to the intersection of San Pedro Avenue and Oblate Drive at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday for what was reported as a major accident involving a pedestrian and a motor vehicle, according to News 4 San Antonio. Police said the woman was in the crosswalk when a red truck traveling southbound at a high rate of speed slammed into her. The driver left the scene without rendering aid, leaving the woman with major injuries. She was taken to a local hospital, where she later died.

San Antonio police said in a report cited by KSAT that the investigation remains ongoing and that no arrests have been made. Police cautioned that the information released so far is subject to change as detectives continue piecing together what happened.

Other Hit-and-Runs in San Antonio

A man was killed in a separate East Side hit-and-run early Friday, with his identification pending and the suspect still at large, the station reported. Just days earlier, a child was hospitalized after being struck by a vehicle in a library parking lot on the Northwest Side, and that driver also fled without being caught.

Other recent cases echo the same grim outcome. A man was killed in an east-side hit-and-run with the suspect fleeing, according to KENS 5. In another incident, a driver fled a Loop 410 scene after striking and dragging a pedestrian, which resulted in the man's death, per MySA.

San Antonio's Pedestrian Death Toll Keeps Climbing

The weekend crash lands amid a broader surge in pedestrian and cyclist deaths across San Antonio. Five people were hit by cars in the city over a single weekend, and three did not survive, according to the San Antonio Report. In 2025, from January through the end of June, the city logged 377 crashes involving people walking or biking, and 29 of those victims had died by the end of June.

The numbers for 2024 were even starker: San Antonio recorded 917 crashes involving pedestrians or cyclists that year, the highest total in the previous three years, and the year ended with 66 fatalities, the outlet reported. Separately, the city has reported 729 pedestrian-involved crashes and 57 pedestrian deaths in a more recent tally, according to the San Antonio Report.

City Programs Aim to Target Dangerous Corridors

In response, San Antonio has rolled out a bilingual safety campaign called Keep Crossings SAfe, aimed at reducing pedestrian deaths along three high-injury corridors: Zarzamora Street, Fredericksburg Road and W.W. White Road. Plans call for multiple mid-block pedestrian crossings along a 12-mile stretch of Zarzamora Street, per the San Antonio Report.

The city's Transportation Department also launched a High-Injury Network Dashboard in December, built on Texas Department of Transportation crash data from 2018 through 2022, to show where the city's most severe and fatal crashes cluster, according to KSAT. That tool is part of a larger $1.2 million campaign also called Keep Crossing Safe. San Antonio established its Vision Zero program back in 2015, and as of December, five Vision Zero-focused projects had been completed citywide with five more under construction.

For now, the search for the driver who struck and killed the 53-year-old woman at San Pedro and Oblate continues as the investigation moves forward.
