The St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra took the stage for the first time at Logan University's Purser Center in Chesterfield. It marked a fresh chapter for an ensemble that traces its roots back more than a century and a half, now settling into a modern campus space built to host exactly this kind of performance.
A New Stage for an Old Orchestra
According to KSDK, the orchestra held its first performance at the Purser Center in Chesterfield. The William D. Purser Center sits on Logan University's 112-acre campus, according to Logan University, which notes the venue is built to host orchestra, choral and band concerts. The main hall seats 900 people on its own, and the university says two additional 288-seat spaces can be combined with it to accommodate up to 1,500 attendees.
The orchestra's roots run far deeper than its new venue. Founded in June 1860, the ensemble describes itself as the longest-running symphony orchestra west of the Mississippi River, the orchestra states on its website. Its most recent season, per the orchestra, marked a milestone 165th year, setting the stage for what it now calls a season of change.
Season of Change Brings Guest Conductors
The orchestra describes its 2026-27 lineup as one defined by transition, featuring what it calls a Guest Conductor Series, according to the orchestra's own account of its programming. The group has also invited audiences to join its full 2026-27 Concert Series, per that same source. Coverage of the orchestra's season opener earlier this year offers a glimpse of how these programs typically come together: the orchestra opened its 166th season with its annual Heroes and Villains POPS concert at the Purser Center, as reported by FOX 2.
That season-opening concert began at 7:30 p.m. and featured guest conductor Christopher Kelts, according to FOX 2. The program mixed music from James Bond, Man of La Mancha, The Lord of the Rings, South Pacific and Star Wars with an armed forces salute, the outlet reported. FOX 2 also noted that the all-volunteer orchestra had announced dates for its 2026-27 season spanning performances at both the Purser Center and the Skip Viragh Center for the Arts.
A Familiar Campus, A New Chapter
Chesterfield and the Logan University campus aren't entirely new ground for the orchestra. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that the group's annual summer pops concert, From the Heart of America, took place on Aug. 1 at the Purser Auditorium on the Logan College campus. Friday's performance builds on that connection, giving the orchestra a now-established presence at the Chesterfield venue as it moves deeper into its 166th season.
