Starlight Theatre will offer Saturday and Sunday matinee performances for the first time in its history starting in 2027, part of a four-show summer lineup that includes The Wiz, Les Misérables, Mary Poppins, and & Juliet. The announcement marks a turning point for the Swope Park venue, where a years-long construction project is finally delivering the shade needed to make daytime outdoor theater bearable in a Kansas City summer.
According to KCTV5, Starlight Theatre President and CEO Lindsey Rood-Clifford said 2027 marks the first time the venue can consistently offer weekend matinees at 2 p.m. The new performances, she said, will give “more opportunities for families, friends, and theatre lovers of all ages to experience summer performances.” Starlight has said the matinee additions coincide with the conclusion of its Uniquely KC capital campaign project, the station reported.
That campaign is the reason the timing finally works. Starlight's new seating canopy is built to cover the front 3,200 seats of the venue's nearly 8,000-seat bowl, spanning the Orchestra, Box, and front Plaza sections, which allows the theater to host shaded matinees for up to 2,500 attendees at a time, per a Starlight Uniquely KC campaign fact sheet. Without it, daytime heat radiating off concrete seating had long made weekend matinees impractical for an open-air house.
A $40 Million Campaign Two Years in the Making
The Uniquely KC campaign is Starlight's first major capital drive in more than two decades, breaking ground on its first phase in October 2024, the Kansas City Business Journal reported. The theater secured $3 million in Missouri Development Finance Board tax credits in February 2026 to help close out funding ahead of a planned completion later this year, the outlet's reporting notes. The same reporting indicates the project was delayed as Starlight continued fundraising, with work planned to resume in fall 2026.
The campaign has drawn substantial philanthropic and civic backing. Starlight raised more than $24 million early in the drive, anchored by gifts of $2.5 million or more from the Sunderland Foundation, the City of Kansas City, the Hall Family Foundation, and Levy Restaurants, according to the fact sheet. KCUR identifies the State of Missouri as an additional donor. The campaign's current priority scope is $40 million.
Fixing a Decades-Old Lighting Problem
Beyond shade, the Uniquely KC project adds two new support towers for a front production truss and light bridge. That resolves a technical constraint where front lighting previously had to rely on a historic pylon at the back of the house, a setup that required some touring Broadway shows to redesign their lighting before playing Kansas City, according to KCUR. The upgrade is expected to make it easier for modern national tours to load in without custom redesigns.
Phase two of the project also calls for replacing the original West Campus restrooms with expanded stall counts, adult changing tables, family restrooms, and a health room, along with a new Gate 3 public path and an expanded East Campus kitchen, per the fact sheet. Those accessibility upgrades were also supported by $3.55 million in municipal funding.
The 2027 Lineup
The season opens with The Wiz, running June 15 through June 20, a Tony Award-winning musical featuring soul, gospel, rock, and 1970s-inspired music, per KCTV5. Les Misérables follows July 6 through July 11, telling what the station describes as a story of broken dreams, unrequited love, passion, and sacrifice.
Mary Poppins, the musical based on the Disney movie, runs August 3 through August 8. The season closes with & Juliet, playing September 28 through October 3, which imagines what might happen next if Juliet had not ended her life over Romeo, according to the same KCTV5 report. Season ticket packages for the 2027 AdventHealth Broadway Series are on sale now, with individual tickets to go on sale at a later date.
A Landmark Under New Pressure
Starlight is one of only two remaining self-producing outdoor Broadway theaters in the country, alongside St. Louis's The Muny. The theater's idea began in the 1920s, and Queen Marie of Romania's 1926 visit and an honorific concert raised $7,000, according to KC Yesterday. It officially opened June 3, 1950, in Swope Park with the centennial pageant Thrills of a Century, celebrating its 75th anniversary throughout 2025, per the Mid-America LGBT Chamber of Commerce.
The matinee expansion also arrives as Kansas City's outdoor venue landscape has gotten more crowded. The $120 million, 16,000-capacity Morton Amphitheater opened in Riverside in June 2026 with a 100,000-square-foot canopy covering 12,000 seats, Hoodline's coverage of a storm-delayed Guns N' Roses show there noted.
The Uniquely KC campaign also touches Starlight's community programming, including an expansion of its community ticket program. Campaign funding is set to support elementary school musical residencies, technical theater student training, and dedicated youth performance series, according to the fact sheet. For a theater built on a century-old civic tradition, the shift to shaded weekend matinees is less a scheduling tweak than proof that the investment is starting to pay off.
