Knox County Schools officials gathered Thursday to formally cut the ribbon on a $8,587,000 expansion at Sterchi Elementary School. The North Knoxville campus now includes a 15,275-square-foot addition housing a new administrative suite, special education suite, media center, art room, and music room.
A Years-Long Project Reaches Its Finish Line
The Knox County Board of Education and the Knox County Commission approved the construction contract with Merit Construction, Inc. back in July 2025, setting the stage for the multi-phase project. Knoxville-based Lewis Group Architects designed the expansion and renovation plan, tasked with weaving modern educational spaces into the school's mid-century bones. As Knoxville News Sentinel reported, the finished addition now gives students dedicated rooms for art, music, and media, alongside administrative and special education space that previously didn't exist in that form.
Beyond the new construction, the project folded in 7,945 square feet of renovations to existing parts of the campus. That work touched the gymnasium and former administrative offices, replaced all of the building's exterior windows, and added a building-wide sprinkler system, according to the district's public notices. The school dates to 1959, and the project included renovations to the facility.
Traffic and Safety Changes Built Into the Design
Construction crews also reconfigured Sterchi Elementary's front entry drive and student drop-off loop. The redesign added parking and a secure main entrance. The updated entry represents one of the more visible shifts in how families experience drop-off and pickup each morning.
The addition includes a media center, art room, and music room, alongside administrative and special education space.
Part of a Larger Countywide Investment
The Sterchi project sits inside a much bigger financial picture for Knox County Schools. In April 2025, WBIR reported on a $700 million budget proposal for Knox County Schools. That figure gives some sense of how the district balances facility investments like Sterchi's against enrollment trends across its 91 campuses, which together serve more than 60,000 students under Rysewyk, who took office in June 2022.
Sterchi's renovation also connects to other recent Hoodline reporting on Knox County Schools leadership. An earlier story on students slipping off a Farragut campus noted that Farragut Primary's current principal previously led Sterchi Elementary, a reminder of how interconnected the district's administrative ranks are across its many schools.
