A dispute that started inside a West Omaha convenience store ended with two men critically wounded in the parking lot just before midnight Tuesday. Omaha police responded to the Mega Saver near 144th and Blondo Streets just after 11:30 p.m. after reports of a shooting, finding a man in his 20s and a man in his 40s suffering from gunshot wounds.
According to KETV, police said the two victims had gotten into a disturbance with a suspect inside the store before the confrontation moved outside, where the suspect opened fire on them in the parking lot. The suspect then drove away from the scene, prompting a search that ended with police locating and arresting him, the station reported. The investigation remains ongoing, and no further details about the nature of the argument have been released.
The Mega Saver sits at 1910 N 144th St at Blondo Street, a location that functions as both a convenience store and fuel station known for staying open late into the night, according to Uber Eats. The Omaha-based chain has expanded rapidly in recent years. A possible sale could grow it to more than 70 locations across four states. In late 2025, Mega Saver announced an agreement to acquire 22 Iowa stores and seven Kansas stores, per CSP Daily News. The company started as a single Omaha storefront in 2002.
A Corridor Already on Edge
This is not the first violent incident along the Blondo Street corridor this month. Just over a week earlier, on October 11, Omaha police responded to a cutting incident near 84th and Blondo that left two people critically injured, a case Hoodline reported on at the time. West Omaha has also seen other recent gun violence, including a September 30 shooting near 120th and West Dodge Road that injured one person and briefly placed Burke High School in secure status before a suspect was arrested, as reported by ABC News.
The pattern extends beyond West Omaha. Hoodline has also covered a fatal shooting that left a 35-year-old Douglas County man dead and a 63-year-old resident hospitalized, as well as a case in which a 25-year-old West Omaha man was booked after firing at a car with a child inside. Each incident has unfolded separately, but together they illustrate how quickly interpersonal disputes in the Omaha area have been escalating into gunfire this fall.
What Nebraska Law Says About Self-Defense Claims
Any self-defense argument that might arise from the Mega Saver shooting would run up against Nebraska's duty-to-retreat standard. Under Nebraska Revised Statute § 28-1409, people in public spaces outside their home or workplace are legally required to retreat if they can safely do so before resorting to deadly force, according to the Giffords Law Center — a notably different standard than a Stand Your Ground law.
First-degree assault is a Class II felony punishable by 1 to 50 years in prison. Nebraska law also classifies a related firearm offense as a Class IC felony. No charges against the suspect in the Mega Saver shooting have been detailed publicly as of this report.
Nebraska's gun laws have also shifted in recent years. Since Governor Jim Pillen signed Legislative Bill 77 into law on April 26, 2023, residents 21 and older who are not legally prohibited from owning firearms can carry concealed handguns in public without a state permit or mandatory safety training, according to the Office of Governor Jim Pillen.
Crime Trends Offer Mixed Picture
Citywide crime numbers have shown a downward trend. The Omaha Police Department reported a 10 percent overall drop in citywide crime in 2025 compared to 2024, continuing a multi-year decline.
Even so, the shooting outside the Mega Saver adds to a string of recent incidents that have rattled West Omaha residents, from the Blondo Street cutting to the Burke High School shooting earlier in October. Police have not released additional details about what sparked the argument inside the store, and the investigation into Tuesday night's shooting continues.
