Propane Tanks and the Risk of Catastrophic Rupture
Exposure of residential LP-gas cylinders to direct heat during structure fires can create a risk of what's known as a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion, or BLEVE. Propane tanks can explode when exposed to fire.
LP-gas cylinders can pose an explosion risk when exposed to fire. Nationally, residential garage fires are not rare: the U.S. Fire Administration and NFPA estimate roughly 6,600 such incidents occur annually across the country, causing an average of 400 injuries and $457 million in property damage.
LAFD's alert tagged the response FS73.
A Block Already in the Spotlight for Redevelopment
The fire adds an unexpected wrinkle to a stretch of Baird Avenue that was already drawing attention before the flames. Just weeks earlier, a developer filed an application with Los Angeles City Planning proposing a six-story, 75-unit apartment building at 7034–7046 N. Baird Avenue, which would replace existing single-family homes on the block, as Hoodline reported in September. The plan includes 12 affordable units and seeks density bonus incentives under city land-use programs.
Cause Still Unclear
The cause of the fire remains undetermined. LAFD is directing anyone with an active emergency to call 911.
