Sunday in Brooklyn is turning 10 years old this October, and the Williamsburg restaurant is marking the milestone with a month of limited-time pancake collaborations rather than a single birthday cake. Beginning Oct. 1, the spot is pairing its famous stack with four different Brooklyn kitchens, one per week, in what it's calling the Sunday Stack Series.
The restaurant first opened in 2016 under chef Jaime Young alongside partners Todd Enany and Adam Landsman, according to Patch. Young's résumé includes stints at Eleven Madison Park and Atera, a pedigree that helped turn Sunday's hazelnut-maple praline and brown butter pancakes into a Williamsburg brunch institution. The Sunday Stack Series, presented by Resy, will roll out a new pancake collaboration every week throughout the month, Patch reports.
The lineup pulls from some of the neighborhood's most talked-about kitchens. Time Out reports the series includes Kellogg’s Diner, Leo, Laser Wolf and JR & Son, giving fans four chances to add pancakes to their October calendar.
Two Different Schedules, Same Four Collaborators
Exactly which restaurant gets which week depends on who you ask. Patch's lineup has Kellogg’s Diner kicking things off on Oct. 1, followed by Leo on Oct. 8, Laser Wolf on Oct. 15 and JR & Son closing out the series on Oct. 22. Time Out, however, reports that JR & Son gets the first turn starting Oct. 1, with Leo following on Oct. 8, Kellogg’s Diner on Oct. 15 and Laser Wolf wrapping things up on Oct. 22.
Both outlets agree on the four participants and the weekly cadence, even if the order differs depending on the source. Per Patch, each pancake will be available for one week, with specific details to be announced on Sunday in Brooklyn’s Instagram.
What's Actually on the Plate
Time Out has details on at least one of the stacks: the JR & Son collaboration is layered with coffee syrup, whipped mascarpone, cocoa and espresso powder. The specific creations for Leo, Kellogg’s Diner and Laser Wolf haven't been detailed publicly, with Sunday in Brooklyn expected to reveal those specifics on Instagram as each week arrives.
JR & Son itself has its own recent comeback story. The Williamsburg restaurant just reopened last May after five years of sitting dark and empty, according to Brooklyn Magazine. Chef Patricia Vega, formerly of Thai Diner, now runs the kitchen at 575 Lorimer Street, at the corner of Metropolitan Avenue, where the restaurant is currently open Wednesday through Sunday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.
A One-Day Ice Cream Detour
Caffè Panna is also joining the festivities, though with a twist: rather than a weeklong run, the ice cream shop's contribution is a single-day event. The Sunday Pancakes pint, available for one day only on next Friday, Oct. 9, combines Sunday in Brooklyn's pancakes with sweet cream ice cream layered with maple-praline caramel, per the same Time Out report.
The anniversary series also arrives as Sunday's parent company has grown well beyond its original Williamsburg dining room. Sunday Hospitality has since expanded to include Rule of Thirds, Café Chelsea, Teruko and the newly opened Dynamo Room, Time Out notes, making the pancake series as much a showcase of the group's expanding footprint as it is a birthday party for the original restaurant.
