New York City is starting Sunday clear and around 59 degrees, but that brief calm is set to wash out quickly: rain arrives after 8 a.m., becomes steady through the afternoon and brings east winds gusting up to 28 mph. The high is expected to reach near 66 degrees, with three-quarters to an inch of rain possible.
Rain Builds Through Sunday Afternoon
Showers may begin around 8 a.m., with rainfall chances rising above 90% from late morning through the evening. The wettest stretch is expected during the afternoon and early evening, while a chance of thunderstorms enters the forecast tonight as northeast winds reach 15 to 18 mph with gusts near 29 mph.
The latest outlook is a sharper update to Hoodline's previous forecast, which already warned of a wet Sunday but had less certainty on the timing and intensity. The National Weather Service now puts the chance of rain at 100% for both Sunday and Sunday night.
Flooding And Waterfront Concerns
Rain totals could create minor flooding in urban and poor-drainage areas, particularly if heavier bands linger over the same neighborhoods. The forecast discussion says an isolated flash-flood threat cannot be ruled out, although the overall risk remains limited, according to the National Weather Service.
NY Harbor, western Long Island Sound and western South Shore Bays could see minor coastal flooding around Monday and Tuesday morning high tides. Ocean beaches may also see 4- to 7-foot breaking waves, while Small Craft Advisories are in effect for area waters, making Sunday a poor day for casual waterfront plans.
Monday Brings A Fast Turnaround
Rain may linger before 8 a.m. Monday, followed by a few showers through late morning. Skies should become mostly sunny in the afternoon, with a high near 70 degrees and a north wind of 7 to 15 mph.
Sunny Middle Of The Week, More Showers Later
Tuesday and Wednesday look like the recovery days, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 70 and 73 degrees. Thursday stays mostly sunny but cooler near 65, then shower chances return Friday and Saturday as highs fall from the mid-60s to around 60.
