A Sunnyvale couple has transformed their property into a fan-built corner of the wizarding world, complete with a flying car and a rebuilt Hagrid's Hut. Known as Whimsyvale, the display sits at 598 Sunnymount Avenue and is free to visit.
As CBS News reported, the Sunnyvale couple transformed their home into a Harry Potter-themed village for Halloween. The property sits at the intersection of Sunnymount Avenue and Spinosa Drive near Las Palmas Park, according to an Instagram post
documenting the display, where visitors can come from sundown until 10 p.m.
A Rebuilt Hagrid's Hut Replaces a Pegboard Original
The creators behind Whimsyvale completed a major overhaul of their Hagrid's Hut centerpiece, swapping in durable plywood and textured stone-like walls. The original structure, built mostly from pegboard and zip ties, had struggled after three years of seasonal use, per a Facebook video from the display's creators.
The rebuild reflects just how much labor goes into keeping a backyard attraction like this running year after year. Beyond the hut, the installation includes Hogsmeade shop fronts, the Great Hall, the Fat Lady, and Hagrid's flying car, according to Instagram posts documenting the display. Local travel guides recommend visiting after dark, when the lighting and animated elements are easiest to see.
Other Harry Potter Halloween Displays
Nearby, a San Jose home operating as Eerie Elegance uses a free Eventbrite ticket system to manage crowds and collects donations for Give Kids The World Village, a charity serving critically ill children, according to a Facebook video about the attraction. Another Harry Potter-themed home in San Jose drew hundreds of visitors during Halloween 2024 while serving as a donation site for a local food bank, as reported by NBC Bay Area. Up north in Marin County, Marin's Halloween Hogwarts Walkthrough in San Rafael offers a free guided walkthrough and is in its fifth year, with an Order of the Phoenix theme.
A Regional Trend With Staying Power
The appetite for immersive, book-to-backyard Halloween experiences stretches well beyond the South Bay. Hoodline previously covered a similar Hogwarts transformation at a multi-house residential display in San Francisco's Bay View neighborhood.
For now, Whimsyvale remains a free attraction for Sunnyvale families and Harry Potter fans, featuring Hagrid's rebuilt hut and a flying car.
