Sunnyvale authorities conducted a three-phase enforcement operation at local smoke shops in June and July, with inspections at eight businesses yielding 7,062 illegal products valued at $114,575.
Victim's Account Triggers Quick Police Response
According to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, officers responded to a report of an armed robbery that had just occurred at the smoke shop on Thursday. The victim told police that the 20-year-old suspect entered the business while armed with a gun, attempted to steal merchandise, and then fled on foot, the department said in its Facebook post.
Officers managed to locate the suspect walking nearby and took him into custody without incident, per the same account. When they searched the area, officers recovered a Glock-style BB gun from the ground near the suspect. The department said the robbery resulted in no injuries, and officials expressed gratitude that no one was hurt during the encounter.
Department Credits Fast Response
Sunnyvale public safety officials credited their officers' swift response with the suspect's quick apprehension and praised the work of the responding team. The department reiterated its commitment to keeping Sunnyvale safe for both residents and local businesses in the wake of the incident.
Thursday's robbery echoes a similar case from January 2025, when several people armed with handguns robbed a different Sunnyvale business, as reported by Mercury News. That incident, reported just before 3 p.m. in the 800 block of Old San Francisco Road near South Wolfe Road, also ended without injuries. Officers arrested one male suspect near the scene, though Mercury News reported the other suspects escaped in a vehicle.
Smoke Shops Already Under Scrutiny
The robbery comes months after Sunnyvale authorities wrapped up a broader crackdown on smoke shops across the city. Public safety officials conducted a three-phased enhanced enforcement operation at local smoke shops in June and July, according to NBC Bay Area. That effort, which included joint inspections with the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration at eight shops, netted 62 boxes containing 7,062 illegal products valued at $114,575, the station reported.
Flavored nicotine vapes made up 76% of the total seizure value, according to a city of Sunnyvale press release. Officials said the operation was launched in response to community concerns about minors' access to tobacco products, and that monetary sanctions and Notices of Violations were issued to business owners, while property owners received Notices of Violations. The city said the department will conduct follow-up inspections to ensure businesses continue complying with state and local laws.
