A man was shot multiple times in the leg Monday afternoon just three blocks from Henninger High School on Syracuse's East Side, with the gunfire reported at about 2:10 p.m. — after the school had dismissed students.
The shooting was reported at 105 Kinne St., according to Syracuse.com, which first reported the incident and cited Onondaga County 911 Center dispatches describing a victim found shot multiple times in the leg. The victim was initially described as an 18-year-old male. A spokesperson for the Syracuse Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment, and Syracuse.com has said it will update its report as more information becomes available. The outlet's Jon Moss reported the story, with Finn Lincoln and Darian Stevenson contributing.
The shooting scene was near Henninger High School.
The Timing of the Shooting
The shooting was reported about 2:10 p.m., after Henninger had dismissed students.
The shooting near Henninger comes nearly two years after an October 2024 shooting, a case that remains part of the backdrop against which students, families and staff are processing another shooting so close to campus.
A Citywide Drop in Violence, With Youth Gun Violence Still a Focus
Monday's shooting happened against a backdrop of declining overall violent crime in Syracuse. Police1 reported that violent crime citywide fell 18% and reported shots-fired calls dropped 22% through Aug. 11, 2025, compared with the same period the year before, with 310 shots-fired calls reported through Aug. 11.
Even so, youth gun violence remains a priority for city officials. Syracuse created the Mayor's Office to Reduce Gun Violence in April 2022 under Director Lateef Johnson-Kinsey, deploying roughly 25 “credible messengers” who respond to neighborhoods after shootings to mediate disputes among young people, as detailed by Police1. Those interrupters must complete three to five crime-free years before they can be hired for the role.
Syracuse reinstated ShotSpotter, and the city credited the technology with a reduction in gun violence, according to SoundThinking, the company behind the system.
Victim Status and School Response
Syracuse.com reported that police said the 18-year-old man was not a Henninger High School student. The school briefly went into a lockout for staff and students who were still inside after the shooting, Syracuse.com reported. It remains unclear whether any suspect was a current Henninger student.
WAER reported that Syracuse hired University of Chicago Crime and Education Lab Senior Research Fellow Dr. Chico Tillmon to conduct a Community Violence Intervention assessment. Tillmon said people aged 22 to 29 were more likely to use a firearm and should be a group to focus on.
Syracuse.com reported that the 18-year-old man was taken to Upstate University Hospital and was expected to survive.
