The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been notified after a man was shot in an encounter with Memphis police near Kimball Avenue. Action News 5 reported that police said the agency was expected to investigate; WREG reported MPD said the TBI was handling the case.
The man was found with gunshot wounds behind a house on Burns Avenue and taken to a hospital in critical condition, the two outlets reported. WREG said two officers fired their weapons and no officers were reported injured.
MPD said the encounter started at about 5:40 p.m. Friday, when officers on patrol in the 2700 block of Kimball Avenue near Lamar Avenue approached a man. He ran and fired several shots, police said; officers then fired back. The account was reported by Action News 5 and WREG.
The man’s identity has not been released. Police have not disclosed how many shots were fired or what kind of weapon was involved. No further details have been released about his medical status or whether charges are being considered.
How TBI investigations work
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says its role in officer-involved shootings is to independently document the scene, collect evidence and interview subjects and witnesses, according to the agency.
The agency also says state law requires a request from the district attorney general for the judicial district where the incident occurred for the TBI to have jurisdiction over a use-of-force investigation; state law does not require the TBI to investigate such cases.
