A Texas barbecue institution just planted its flag in the desert. Terry Black's BBQ has closed on an $11.2 million purchase of a nine-parcel property at 3925 N. Brown Avenue in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, marking the Central Texas-style smokehouse's first-ever Arizona location.
LevRose Commercial Real Estate announced it completed the sale on Tuesday, according to levrose.com. The 0.74-acre site includes roughly 10,409 square feet of existing buildings, and the brokerage described the sale as reflecting the continued appeal of premier Old Town Scottsdale real estate for established restaurant brands looking to secure a foothold there.
Danielle Davis, Branden Mondragon and Trent McCullough of LevRose represented the sellers in the deal, the firm said. As reported by Chron, Davis called the acquisition a unique opportunity and said Terry Black's BBQ will bring new energy to Scottsdale as it enters Arizona.
A Texas Name With Deep Roots
Terry Black's Barbecue built its reputation as a Central Texas-style barbecue business, and the Scottsdale property purchase was made by Black Family Hospitality, per the same Chron report. The company's expansion has been steady: since 2022, Terry Black's has added locations in Fort Worth, Houston, Lockhart, New Braunfels and Waco, and it opened a Houston Heights location in August. A San Antonio location is also under construction, Chron reports.
The Scottsdale property would mark Terry Black's second location outside Texas, following a Nashville, Tennessee outpost that is expected to open in early 2027, according to the same account. The brand has also picked up some unlikely attention along the way — Chron notes that Robert F. Kennedy has highlighted his own visits to Terry Black's Austin location.
Hospitality Ambitions Beyond the Smoker
Black Family Hospitality's appetite extends past barbecue pits. The company is constructing a boutique hotel on the same property as its new Houston restaurant, with that hotel scheduled to open in 2027 at the earliest, per the Chron report. Company leader Mark Black said in 2025 that Black Family Hospitality was looking for real estate opportunities and aimed to expand its hospitality business around Texas, Houston and the broader United States, according to the same account.
Part of a Broader Texas Food Wave
The Scottsdale deal lands amid a broader trend of Texas-based chains pushing into the Phoenix area. Texas' influence on metro Phoenix's dining scene is big and ever-growing, according to azcentral.com, which tracked several Texas restaurant chains that opened in Arizona this year.
Not every Texas barbecue transplant has found instant success away from home. Texas Monthly notes that Evie Mae's Pit Barbeque, which opened a location in Miramar Beach, has had trouble finding success in an area unfamiliar with Texas barbecue, per the outlet's ongoing coverage of Texas Monthly. Whether Terry Black's fares differently in Scottsdale remains to be seen, but for now the brand has secured its spot on N. Brown Avenue — nine parcels, more than 10,000 square feet of existing buildings, and a foothold in a market it has never served before.
