Oklahoma City police arrested three men from the Houston area after a car burglary investigation that started with a victim's trip to the bank and ended with officers recovering stolen cash outside a Lowe's near I-240 and Santa Fe Avenue. Investigators believe the men may be connected to a Houston-based criminal street gang tied to similar thefts across the metro.

Bank Trip Turns Into Burglary Scene at Lowe's

An Oklahoma City police officer responded Wednesday to a reported car burglary at the Lowe's near I-240 and Santa Fe Avenue, according to KOKH. The victim had completed a banking transaction before stopping at the home improvement store, and suspects broke a window of the victim's vehicle and stole the cash left inside, the station reported. Authorities believed the crime fit the pattern of a jugging incident, a term police use to describe suspects who watch people leave financial institutions and then target them to steal cash.

The tactic has become familiar to Oklahoma City investigators. Police define jugging as someone following a person after they leave a bank or ATM with the intent of stealing their money, according to KFOR. In a separate case, police told News 9 that jugging suspects wait for customers to leave a bank with a large amount of cash, then follow them to their next location before striking.

Surveillance and License Plate Readers Lead to Arrests

Oklahoma City police identified the suspect's vehicle using surveillance footage, then used automatic license plate readers and additional camera coverage to locate the vehicle and establish surveillance, per the KOKH report. Officers eventually conducted a traffic stop and took three people into custody, recovering the cash stolen in the burglary.

The suspects were identified as 22-year-old Datavien Arvie, 42-year-old Dennis Earl and 32-year-old Jalen Gross, all from the Houston area, the station's report states. All three were arrested on complaints of third-degree burglary and conspiracy to commit a felony, per the same account.

Investigators Eye Houston Gang Connection

Investigators believe the suspects may be affiliated with a Houston-based criminal street gang that has been linked to similar jugging incidents in Oklahoma City and surrounding areas, according to the KOKH report. That suspicion echoes patterns Oklahoma City police have flagged in earlier cases this year, including one in which an officer wrote that perpetrators often come from Houston, victimize more than one person in a single day, and travel back to Houston immediately, as reported by KOCO.

Police have run multiple operations this year targeting the crime trend. On Sept. 4, Oklahoma City Police and the Real Time Information Center conducted a large sting in which an undercover officer in plain clothes left a bank and was immediately followed by an SUV to a gas station near Northwest 150th Street and May Avenue, according to KOKH's earlier reporting. The suspects in that case broke the passenger-side window of the officer's vehicle, and one suspect fled on foot when officers approached.

A Pattern of Similar Cases Across the Metro

Other jugging cases this year have followed a similar script. News 9 reported that Oklahoma City police investigated two cases involving customers leaving a bank near Southwest 89th Street and Western Avenue, including one construction-business owner who said thieves stole $10,000 from his vehicle after he made a withdrawal for his company. KFOR reported that Oklahoma City police arrested Bryce Horton and Sebastian Ibarra on September 26 in a similar case involving a Chase Bank customer, both men also from Texas.

In another arrest tied to the same September 4 sting, police said suspects Wilson and Knowles followed an undercover officer in a black Volkswagen before one of them broke the vehicle's front passenger window, according to KFOR's review of court documents. News 9 also reported on the arrests of two other out-of-state suspects, Christopher Alexander and Jacqueline Hawkins, whose car contained more than $4,000 in cash along with equipment used to break into vehicles — cash that investigators tied to a separate car burglary committed the same day.
