Three people were shot and taken to local hospitals early Tuesday after gunfire erupted at a residence in the 200 block of Freedom Drive in Belleville, with their current conditions still unknown. Police say all three were participants in whatever conflict led to the shooting, and investigators are not seeking any additional suspects.
According to the Belleville Police Department, officers responded to the scene and found three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds connected to the same incident. Police have not released details on what led to the gunfire or the relationship between those involved.
The response drew help from outside Belleville's own department. The St. Clair County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene, and Illinois State Police also responded.
A Block With a Violent Past
Belleville police investigated the death of a 22-year-old following a Freedom Drive shooting, according to RiverBender.com.
A shooting on Freedom Drive was also reported in 2015.
Questions About the Shooting
Any charging decision in Tuesday's shooting will ultimately rest with the St. Clair County State's Attorney's Office.
Whether any of the three people hospitalized Tuesday acted in self-defense — or who may have initiated the conflict — remains an open question.
New Leadership Overseeing the Investigation
The investigation is unfolding under relatively new department leadership. The Belleville City Council appointed Mark Heffernan as Chief of Police in September 2026 following the death of longtime Chief Matthew Eiskant the previous month. Heffernan had served as assistant chief and then acting chief during Eiskant's medical leave before his formal appointment.
Belleville, the county seat of St. Clair County and the largest city in Illinois' Metro East region, had a population of 42,404 as of the 2020 U.S. Census and sits roughly 15 miles east of downtown St. Louis. The city's 62226 ZIP code, which includes Freedom Drive, carries a violent crime index about 10 percent above the national average, driven largely by aggravated assault and robbery, per data compiled by DoorProfit.
Other Recent Belleville Shootings
Tuesday's incident also follows a familiar pattern for Belleville police in handling scenes with multiple gunshot victims. In a domestic triple shooting in the 300 block of South Church Street, one woman died and two others were injured; St. Clair County prosecutors later charged the suspect in that case with first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery.
Hoodline has covered other Belleville shootings in recent months, including a September shootout at a Lillian Drive home involving a juvenile and vehicle occupants that ended with two suspects in custody.
Police say the investigation remains active and that additional information will be released as it becomes available and appropriate for public disclosure. The conditions of the three people hospitalized Tuesday have not yet been made public.
