A Tony and Grammy Award winner is bringing her Broadway voice to Wailuku this weekend. Lauren Patten will headline A Night at the Masquerade, the opening concert of the Broadway on Maui series, at the Historic ʻĪao Theater this Saturday, Oct. 24, at 7 p.m.
The concert is presented by the Wave of Harmony Foundation in partnership with Maui OnStage, according to Maui Now. Proceeds benefit the foundation's Harmony Tickets program, which buys and sponsors tickets so students, kūpuna and neighbors can attend live performances. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and tickets run from $25 to $55, with students and kūpuna receiving $10 off, per the same report.
A Tony Winner With Deep Broadway Roots
Patten won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical at the 74th Annual Tony Awards in September 2021 for originating the role of Jo in Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill, a character she helped develop during early workshop readings, according to Playbill. She also earned a Grammy Award and a Drama Desk Award for that same role. The report's credits for Patten also include Fun Home on Broadway, television appearances on Death and Other Details, Blue Bloods, The Good Fight and Succession, and a current role on the Amazon series Off Campus.
Her Maui stop comes just months after she starred as Suzanna Slater in Second Stage Theater's Broadway debut production of Gina Gionfriddo's dark comedy Becky Shaw at the Hayes Theater this spring — a run that marked the play's long-awaited Broadway debut 17 years after its Off-Broadway premiere, according to Second Stage Theater. Hoodline previously reported that Patten performed at Kingston's Hutton Brickyards in August, an event that drew 2,875 attendees.
Local Singers and Musicians Share the Stage
Patten will perform alongside Maui singers Puakenikeni Mochizuki-Kepler, Casey Hughes, Aida Rose, Zoe Ronen, P.T. Mahoney, Kiegan Otterson, Dale Button and John Rowehl, per the Maui Now report. The backing band includes Vania Jerome as music director on keyboard, Prem Brosio on guitar, Troy Otto on bass and Nolan Wren on drums. Claire and Reid Bowman are serving as the evening's presenting sponsors.
Broadway on Maui is described as a concert series bringing Broadway artists to stages across the island to perform alongside local singers and musicians, the report notes. The model traces back to the Wave of Harmony Foundation's first fundraiser, Broadway on Maui: A Night Under the Stars, which took place at South Maui Gardens in Kīhei in May 2025 and featured Broadway veterans Ted Neeley, Yvonne Elliman, Teri Bibb and Jim Price alongside high school performers from Baldwin, King Kekaulike and Seabury Hall, according to Maui Now's earlier coverage of the inaugural show.
A Historic Stage Built for the Moment
Built in Wailuku in 1928 in the Spanish-Mission Revival style at an original cost of $40,000, the Historic ʻĪao Theater seats 413 people and stands as Maui's only surviving historic movie and vaudeville house from that era, according to Maui OnStage. The venue was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in February 1995 and is Hawaii's third-oldest operating theater. It previously hosted the foundation's free Kamaʻāina Holiday Spectacular in December, a sold-out show featuring Broadway veterans Q. Smith and Lawrence Stallings that Hoodline covered in its piece on Wailuku's holiday hot ticket.
Wave of Harmony Foundation founder and president Barry Kawakami said he hopes this will be the first of many Broadway on Maui concerts, per Maui Now's reporting. Kawakami was inspired to create the organization after making his own stage debut at age 9 at the Baldwin High School Performing Arts Learning Center on Maui, according to the Wave of Harmony Foundation. The Kīhei-based nonprofit was established to expand arts accessibility across the island.
Master Classes and a Wider Funding Push
Beyond the Saturday concert, Patten will teach two master classes titled Acting a Monologue or Song at the Maui OnStage Education and Youth Studio in Queen Kaʻahumanu Center in Kahului. The youth session is scheduled for Friday at 6:30 p.m. for ages 11 to 17, and the adult session follows Sunday at 5:30 p.m. for ages 18 and up, per Maui Now. Registration and financial-aid information are available through the foundation.
The foundation's support for Maui's performing arts extends well beyond ticket subsidies. In May 2024, it received a $110,000 grant from The Gilbert and Aileen Kam Chuck Charitable Trust to serve as the 2024–2025 season sponsor for four youth drama initiatives, including Theatre Theatre Maui, providing free tuition for all westside keiki through the season sponsorship, according to Maui Now's 2024 report. The foundation also offers the Harmony Care Program, an emergency-support initiative for Maui performing-arts workers. Marji Knowles and Michael Tibbott contributed $130,000 to a new emergency-support initiative.
Tickets and donations to Harmony Tickets, along with master class registration and financial aid information, are available at waveofharmony.org.
