A Working Freight Corridor Through Rural Ohio County
The Paducah & Louisville Railway provides regional freight service. Coal trains run on the line, and Horse Branch is among the places listed along it, per Jim Pearson Photography.
That corridor has deep roots in the region. The line was established in the 1870s as part of the Elizabethtown & Paducah Railroad before it joined the Illinois Central Railroad system to move Western Kentucky coal and freight, according to West-Central Kentucky History & Genealogy. Early rail construction along that route helped shape rural communities that grew up along US Route 62.
Crossing Safety Remains a Statewide Concern
Nationally, there were 2,274 highway-rail grade crossing collisions in 2025, resulting in 285 fatalities and 769 injuries.
State officials have directed money toward rail infrastructure through grants.
Kentucky's rail network is dense with potential hazard points: the state has 4,707 highway-rail at-grade crossings, consisting of 2,293 public crossings and 2,414 private crossings, according to Kentucky Transportation Cabinet data cited by the Schafer Law Office. The network includes both public and private crossings.
What the Law Requires at Crossings
Drivers should heed warning signals and obey lowered gates at railroad crossings.
The specific warning equipment present at the Horse Branch crossing, the sequence of events leading up to Wednesday's collision, and the driver's current medical condition have not been detailed publicly. The Ohio County Sheriff's Office has not released additional updates beyond confirming the collision and the driver's hospitalization.
